The Everest Base Camp Trek, a journey that stands as a pinnacle of adventure, is a magnet for thousands of travelers annually. We've curated a comprehensive guide on the Everest Base Camp Trek Altitude, Trekking Map, Total walking distance, and Walking Duration daily. We aim to equip you with the necessary knowledge to prepare effectively and set realistic expectations for this iconic trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek Altitude Profile

The Everest Base Camp trek starts with a short flight from Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) to Lukla (2,860 m/9,383 ft).

From Kathmandu to Lukla, the altitude changes massively in just 35 minutes, so you will spend the night in Phakding (2,610 m/8,563 ft) the same day. Phakding is only 200 meters below Lukla, which will help with acclimatization.

Crucially, the two acclimatization days interspersed between the treks from Lukla to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft) play a pivotal role in helping you acclimatize to the altitude, thereby reducing the risk of altitude sickness.

On the acclimatization days, you will hike to a high point and return to the same village to spend the night. This process helps acclimatize the body. From Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft), you will hike to the Hotel Everest View (3,962 m/13,000 ft). Similarly, from Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft), you will hike to Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m/16,732 ft). Each day, you will gain up to 500 meters (1,640 ft).

The Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft) is the highest Elevation during the Everest Base Camp trek.

You will not spend a night or a long time here as you will be above 5,500 meters (18,044 ft). Instead, ascend to Kala Patthar to enjoy a lovely sunrise, descend to Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft), and begin the return trek to Lukla.

Overall, from Lukla- the starting point of the Everest Base Camp trek to the highest point of the journey- Kala Patthar, you will gain 2,685 meters (8,809 ft).

The Everest Base Camp trek is an iconic and lifetime adventure. For some, it is just another adventure, but completing this trek is a monumental achievement for most. Whatever category you fall into, you must understand why the EBC Trek takes more than ten days to complete, the distance covered during the trek, the daily trekking hours, and the elevation change it brings.

Understanding these things will help you set the right expectations for the journey and make the overall trekking experience smooth. You can do the Everest Base Camp trek in many ways, but one standard and most famous EBC trek itinerary is the 16-day package.

In this blog, we will break down the general Everest Base Camp trek distance (if you follow the mainstream trail). Do note that the time of the year you choose to do the trek will affect your distance and difficulty.

Total Walking Distance During Everest Base Camp Trek

The total distance covered during the Everest Base Camp trek is 110 kilometers (70 miles). Trekkers usually cover this distance while following the standard Everest Base Camp trekking route, which starts and ends from/to Lukla. The trek typically takes 12-14 days, allowing for acclimatization and side trips.

Note: This distance may vary slightly depending on your specific route, the side trips you embark on, and your starting point in the region.

In 12 to 14 days of trek, you will cover 11 to 15 km on average daily. So, you do not have to worry even though 130 km sounds enormous. Trekkers cover around 3-4 km per hour, so 15 km daily is a manageable and comfortable pace.

It's important to note that you don't have to cover 3-4 km every hour. You can set your own pace and ascend gradually. The distance mentioned above is achievable by trekkers of all ages, whether experienced or beginners.

In addition, trekking with a company like us will allow you to walk freely, as our porters will carry heavy bags. You will only have a daypack of essentials yourself, which will help you focus on walking, and you can enjoy the trek freely, knowing that you have the support you need.
