Successful Tips for Everest Base Camp Trek from Pokhara

Everest Base Camp trek tips that will actually make your trip much better- genuine tips from trekkers who have already done this trek.

The tips below are collected from our trekkers who have done the Everest Base Camp trek with us. These are their genuine advice for our future trekkers:

  • Do not bring your running sneakers for the Everest Base Camp trek. You will need proper trekking boots designed to help navigate the mountainous terrain safely. You will have more support for your ankle and less risk of sprain or other injuries.
  • You have to wear used trekking boots when hiking. A new pair will give blisters and make the walk very challenging. Therefore, if you plan to buy new trekking boots, buy them early and break into them.
  • You need more than two pairs of trekking pants. Otherwise, you will end up wearing one pair of pants for 6 to 7 days straight, and imagine walking 6 to 7 hours daily in those pants. Adding 1-2 more pairs will give you more room, and you will feel less gross.
  • Like pants, carry 2 or 3 beanies because you will wear them throughout the day, even while sleeping. Having 2 or 3 pairs will allow you to rotate or separate them for walking, sleeping, and post showers. Your head will itch less, and you will feel more refreshed.
  • Wet wipes or sanitary wipes are essential to have in your daypack during trekking. If you love animals, you will get a bazillion opportunities to pet local dogs and cats while trekking. It's cute and delightful, but you don't want to keep your hands unclean after that. There is not much running water available along the trail, so it is highly recommended to carry a couple of extra packets of wet wipes and a hand sanitizer.
  • Buy good, high-quality socks. You do not necessarily have to spend hundreds of bucks, but get some high-quality ones. We highly recommend packing at least 6 to 7 pairs of liner socks or more if you have a stinky feet problem. Likewise, carry 3 to 4 pairs of warm fuzzy socks. A thermal bed sock is highly recommended to keep your feet warm at night.
  • Pack tea bags or if you know anything that can help you freshen up your shoes while you sleep. While sleeping, put tea bags inside your shoes. It will soak up all the nasty smells. Use new tea bags every night. This recommendation is your personal choice.
  • Your general pair of sunglasses will not be that helpful in the mountains. You will need UV sunglasses. Likewise, you can also pack snow sunglasses.
  • Get a Nalgene bottle. These bottles are made of a unique material, and they don't melt when you put warm water in them. Likewise, the water doesn't freeze if the temperature goes below zero, which is perfect because the Everest Base Camp trek has a range of temperatures. (Life hack: in the evening, fill the water bottle with boiling water and use it as a body warmer). The Nalgene bottle will cost anywhere between Npr 1,200 to Npr 3,500 for 1 to 1.5 liters.
  • Buy a buff with two layers. Two layers usually have a thin and a fleece side. You can use one or both layers as per the weather demands.
  • Touch screen gloves will make taking pictures and videos very easy. If you love to capture the moment quickly while the moment is still going, we highly recommend you get your inner gloves that are touchscreen compatible.
  • You will be carrying a daypack during trekking, so your daypack must be comfortable because you will walk 6 to 7 hours daily carrying it. Make sure your daypack has a waist strap. It puts all the weight on your hips, and nothing rubs on your shoulders, which makes walking very comfortable. You can buy a nice daypack with a waist strap under Npr 4000 or rent one at a lower price.
  • Many trekkers overlook water bladders but trust us, it's such a great investment for your trek. You do not have to stop every time to drink water; you can pull out and put your water bottle in your daypack. A water bladder makes drinking water very easy and increases your water intake during trekking, keeping you hydrated and lowering the risks of altitude sickness.
  • SPF and lip balm are a must on the Everest Base Camp trek, but you also need a nice moisturizer. The sun is very intense, and the climate is very dry. You need a cream that not only protects you from intense sun rays but also keeps your skin hydrated.
  • Layering is very important during the trek. One second, you will feel too cold. One second, you will feel too hot. Because of that, you will constantly be zipping layers on and off. Therefore, pack a gilet, which will help keep your core warm, but your arms will be out so that you can maintain a good temperature balance. You do not have to buy an expensive gilet. Get on in Kathmandu at a very affordable price.
  • Good snacks will be your lifeline on the trek. No doubt the meals in the lodges will be very appetizing but long hours of walking will make you hungry sooner than you may expect. Bars, trail mix, fruit roll-ups, and nuts are great snacks to maintain energy. We recommend that trekkers purchase ample snacks for the journey in Kathmandu and do not rely on buying them during trekking. First, all snacks and bars cost more in the mountains, and many are outdated.

Everest Base Camp trek from Pokhara itinerary

You will start the journey by driving from Pokhara to Kathmandu, Nepal. Spend one night in Kathmandu and take a Lukla flight either from Kathmandu Airport or Ramechhap Airport. Note that you have to drive around 4 to 5 hours to reach Ramechhap Airport.

Usually, in the spring and autumn seasons, Lukla flights are operated from Ramechhap Airport to manage high traffic at Kathmandu Airport. The Lukla flight is around 35 to 30 minutes long and presents superb aerial views of the Himalayas.

You will fly with your guide to Lukla, and the porter will join your group here. Upon landing in Lukla, meet the porter and walk through the village. You will descend from Lukla and trek through rhododendron forests to Phakding villages.

On the way, cross many suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River and pass a few small villages. Your first-night stay will be in Phakding. The next day, you will leave for Namche Bazaar, the most significant Sherpa settlement in the Everest region.

The trail ascends and descends through lush hills and crosses several suspension bridges, including the long Tenzing Hillary Suspension Bridge. In Monjo, we will register our permits at the police check post and enter the Sagarmatha National Park.

After Monjo, the trail gradually gets steep as Namche Bazaar gets closer. We have two-night stays in Namche Bazaar. You will spend an acclimatization day in this village as well. It is essential to avoid altitude sickness further on the way.

We would most likely visit the Hotel Everest View for the acclimatization hike. After Namche Bazaar, the trail continues to Tengboche village, where you will explore the biggest monastery in the Khumbu region.

From here, the trail descends through dense forest to Imja Khola and goes past Pangboche village on the way to Dingboche. Dingboche is known as the summer valley in the Everest region. Here, you will see many terraces where locals grow potatoes and grains.

You will spend another two nights in Dingboche village. This time, you will hike to Nagarjun Hill to acclimate. It will be the first significant altitude gain on this trek. Dingboche onwards, you will leave the treeline behind and enter the alpine zone.

Ascend to Dughla and trek along the Khumbu Glacier moraine to reach Lobuche village. Spend a night here and hike to Gorak Shep the next day. You will walk to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar from Gorak Shep.

Gorak Shep is the last settlement before these two destinations. After catching a surreal sunrise and Mount Everest view from Kala Patthar, you will follow the same trail back to Lobuche village and take a different route to Pheriche.

From here, you will walk to Namche Bazaar and retrace the trail back to Lukla. Take a morning flight to Kathmandu. Your guide will drop you off at the hotel. The remaining day is free.

Must-Know
Essential Information

Altitude sickness risk during the trek and how to avoid it

Altitude sickness is common during high-altitude adventures like the Everest Base Camp trek. Do all trekkers suffer from it? The answer to this question is NO. It depends on your previous high-altitude exposure and how well you can acclimatize during trekking.

The first thing you should know is that your fitness and age are not related to altitude sickness. So, do not overlook it just because you are fit or young. Secondly, our Everest Base Camp trek 14 days itinerary is designed to provide easy acclimatization opportunities to our trekkers.

You will have two acclimatization breaks, which is enough to adjust to altitude. Likewise, our guide will monitor your blood sugar level and help you mitigate any uneasiness. In case you suffer from symptoms of altitude sickness, our trained guide will provide first aid.

Follow the below advice to avoid altitude sickness during Everest Base Camp trekking from Pokhara:

  • Maintain your walking pace, and do not rush. Enjoy the journey and relish nature.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks and cigarettes while ascending. Likewise, keep your caffeine intake as low as possible. These things dehydrate the body and increase the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Drink at least 2 liters of water and have lots of ginger-honey teas to acclimate. Also, include soups and soupy food in your meals.
  • Listen to your body, and if you feel discomfort or see symptoms like headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, insomnia, etc, inform your guide.

Accommodation and meals in Kathmandu

On this Everest Base Camp trek from Pokhara Itinerary, you will spend two nights in Kathmandu- one before starting the trek and another after completing the trek. Our package includes a three-star hotel in Kathmandu. You will stay in Thamel, the bustling tourist area in the city.

The room will be booked on single or double occupancy as per your choice. Likewise, for meals, we only have breakfasts included in the package cost in Kathmandu. The breakfast will be a complimentary service by the hotel where you will spend the night.

Accommodation and meals during trekking

During Everest Base Camp hiking, you will spend nights in tea houses. Tea houses are basic accommodations available along the EBC trail for the trekkers.

  • Luxury lodges are also available at an additional cost.
  • We will book twin-shared rooms. Single rooms are limited and cost extra money. Washrooms are common in basic tea houses, so you will share them with other trekkers. Western-style toilets are found in many places.
  • Hot running water is limited, especially above Namche Bazaar. Services like WiFi, hot shower, and charging may cost you a few bucks, so kindly carry Nepali currency for these personal expenses.
  • Similarly, meals in the tea houses are fantastic. In villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you will find a plethora of dishes to indulge in, including biryani, pizza, freshly brewed coffee, bakery items, sushi, etc.
  • Dal bhat, momo, thukpa, porridge, soups, and Nepali-style chow mein are some common foods that you will have during trekking. These dishes are nutrient-rich and carbohydrate-dense, ideal for providing ample energy for long trekking hours.

Drinking water

Most trekkers carry water purification tablets on the Everest Base Camp trek. Double-purifying the water during hiking is a good idea to avoid indigestion or stomach aches.

Plastic water bottles are found along the trail, but they are not a cost-effective option and harm the environment. Instead, you can buy boiled water to drink in tea houses. It will cost you way less and is safe to drink, chech the detail guide about the available foods and drinks on Ebc trek,

Best time to trek to Everest Base Camp from Pokhara

Nepal has four seasons- spring (March to May), summer/monsoon (June to August), autumn (September to November), and winter (December to February).

You can do the Everest Base Camp trek from Pokhara in all four seasons. However, some seasons are better than others because of ideal weather and climate conditions.

We have shared Everest Base Camp trekking in all four seasons below:

Spring (March to May): Spring is one of the best seasons for the Everest Base Camp trek from Pokhara. It is a season of rhododendron blossoms, which makes the trekking route incredibly beautiful. Likewise, the weather and climate are on point, with a clear sky for the finest mountain views. There can be occasional rainfall or snowfall towards the start and end of the season because of the season shift period.

Summer/monsoon (June to August): Summer and monsoon seasons overlap each other in Nepal. It is the hottest time of the year. Likewise, the humidity is also highest, and the sky is covered with dense clouds on many days. Rainfall makes the trails muddy and slippery and increases the movement of leeches and other bugs. The vegetation, rivers, and the soothing scent of nature are incredible in summer/monsoon. Trekkers are recommended to pack rain gear and have 1-2 contingency days in their itinerary.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn is the second best time of the year to trek to Everest Base Camp. It is the season of festivals in Nepal. The climate begins to cool down, and daylight hours get longer. Mountain views are crystal clear, and the weather is stable. The festivity around the country adds more edge to your journey.

Winter (December to February): Winter is another not-so-popular time for Everest Base Camp trekking, but it has high potential. Unstable weather and extreme cold are the biggest drawbacks of Everest Base Camp winter trekking. Less crowded trails, low service charges, and stunning snowy landscapes are the main highlights of this snow. Wearing the right clothes, packing winter gear, and having 1-2 contingency days in your itinerary in case Lukla's flight delays will make the winter trek possible.
