Best Time for Short Mardi Himal trek from Pokhara: When to do Short Mardi Himal Trek?

The Short Mardi Himal Trek can be completed throughout the year. Still, the best time for the 5-day Mardi Himal Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), due to pleasant weather, good visibility, and optimal trail conditions. However, each season offers a unique experience. Here’s what you can expect:

Short Mardi Himal trek in Spring Season (March to May): Best for Rhododendrons and clear views

The spring season (March to May) is one of the best/popular times to do the Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara, as this season offers clear skies with mild temperatures. Another attraction of the Spring Trek is the blooming Rhododendron flowers, which burst into vibrant shades of red and pink.

  • Best for photographers and nature lovers
  • Excellent visibility of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Mardi Himal
  • Comfortable daytime temperatures and cool nights

Short Mardi Himal trek in Autumn Season (September to November): best weather

Another popular time to trek Mardi Himal is the Autumn Season. The weather in autumn is stable, dry, and has minimal rainfall. Post-monsoon, the Autumn Mardi Himal Trek offers crisp and clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures, making it perfect for long walking days.

  • Clear blue skies and panoramic Himalayan Views
  • Dry trail conditions and stable weather
  • Perfect for first-time trekkers or families with children

Short Mardi Himal trek in summer or Monsoon season (Mid-June to August): Green area

The short Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara is doable in the monsoon season, although it is not the most popular time. You will also witness lush landscapes, misty hills, and abundant greenery, all set against a stunning natural backdrop. You will experience the best natural scent, a soothing forest aroma, and the best of both worlds. However, you need to be especially prepared to discuss rain on muddy trails.

  • Frequent rain, muddy trails, and leeches in forests
  • Dramatic skies and vibrant greenery
  • Best for experienced trekkers or photographers who don’t mind the rain

Short Mardi Himal trek in Winter Season (December to February)

Winter trekking is possible and beautiful. Mardi Himal trek from Pokhara is doable and available in the winter season. You’ll enjoy peaceful, snow-dusted landscapes and fewer trekkers, especially at high camp. But, you should be prepared for cold temperatures and potential snow at higher elevations (High Camp at 3,580 m).

Short Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty: How difficult is Short Mardi Himal Trek?

The Short Mardi Himal trek is an offbeat option, but less challenging than famous trekking routes in the Annapurna region, such as the Annapurna Circuit and the Nar Phu Valley Trek.

The Short Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate trek originating in Pokhara, which provides the ideal proportionality between challenge and accessibility to those trekkers who have basic to above average fitness levels. With the distance of 40-50 km established over 5 days, the daily hikes take 4-6 hours, as the trail progresses with the gradual increase in altitude, starting at Kande (1,770m) and culminating at the Base Camp of Mardi Himal (4,500m).

Unlike long, high-altitude treks, which need you to have expertise in technical climbing, this Short Mardi Himal Tour does not. The trekkers must, however, be okay with a lot of uphill portions, particularly between Low Camp and the High Camp, and rocky alpine routes in the base camp. Nonetheless, some sections can be steep and challenging, especially ascending to the High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp. Beware of the narrow valleys and high ridges.

It is a combination of forest trails, high ridges, and stone staircases in the route that makes getting there worthwhile, challenging enough to feel rewarding, but not ridiculously difficult to someone who is otherwise in reasonable activity. The tourist infrastructure along the short Mardi Himal trail is minimal, which adds to the trek's difficulty. Basic tea houses are available along the way but offer minimal services.

If you're comfortable walking 4–6 hours a day and enjoy the outdoors, you're ready for this trek. With expert guidance from Outfitter Himalaya, even beginners can confidently complete this stunning Himalayan journey.

Altitude Sickness during Short Mardi Himal Trek

Although the Short Mardi Himal trek is a respectful trek ending at the Mardi Himal Base 4,500 meters (14,764 ft.) altitude, there is not a strong severity of altitude sickness since the climb is not too steep, nor does the trek itself last too long. Nevertheless, it is good to learn how to avoid and cope with the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) to maintain quality and secure adventures.

You should be aware of the potential altitude-related issues and ensure you acclimatize correctly by following a gradual ascent and staying hydrated.

Symptoms of altitude sickness

  • Some early symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath
  • If you notice these signs, do not ascend further. Inform your guide immediately.

Preventive measures for altitude sickness

  • The most effective way to avoid altitude sickness is to ascend slowly and not rush. Our short Mardi Himal trekking itinerary allows for gradual altitude gain, which is helpful in acclimatization.
  • Stay hydrated (3-4 litres) and avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, which leads to dehydration.
  • Make sure you get enough rest and sleep during the trek. Adequate sleep helps your body recover and adapt to the changing altitude.
  • You should maintain a balanced diet and eat foods rich in carbohydrates. It provides energy and helps with acclimatization.
  • Pay attention to your body's signals. Do not push your body unnecessarily.

Safety Tips for Short Mardi Himal Trek

The Short Mardi Himal Trek around Pokhara can be viewed as moderately difficult, but similar to any trek in the Himalayas, it does require preparation and awareness. Here is the list of the most important safety tips that will help you have a safe and pleasant time on your 5-day adventure:

  • Acclimatize Gradually: Although the Mardi Himal Base Camp is located at 4,500 m, the incline is relatively smooth. Follow the recommended schedule and avoid rushing. We ensure that your body has sufficient time to adapt.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, aiming for at least 3-4 liters per day. Another factor that enhances the occurrence of altitude sickness is dehydration. Do not consume too much caffeine or alcohol along the hike.
  • Watch for the Symptoms of Altitude Sickness: Be aware of warning symptoms, including headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing. In case of symptoms, go down at once and report to your guide.
  • Use Trekking Poles: Poles reduce the torsion on the knees, particularly on steep descents (such as when you descend from High Camp to Low Camp). They come in handy particularly when you have just started trekking.
  • Pack and wear Layers for weather changes: Weather on the mountains is very dynamic. In the spring or fall, pack layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, and gloves.
  • Travel with a Reliable Guide/Agency: By trekking out with an experienced operator such as Outfitter Himalaya, you can ensure:
  • Guided path assistance
  • Ability to evacuate on an emergency basis
  • Accommodation, meals, and permits are handled.
  • Weather reports and local experience
  • Carry Basic First Aid: Bring pain relievers, altitude medication (such as Diamox), bandages, antiseptic ointment, and electrolyte supplements. The guides also carry first-aid kits in case of an emergency.
  • Travel on marked Trails: Stay on the designated path, never deviate from it under any circumstances, except in fog or snow. In some areas, the trail is also narrow, with steep falls close to High Camp.
  • Respect culture and Nature: Wildlife should not be disturbed (or littered, or disrespect local customs). Be polite and greet villagers with a smile and a Namaste. Respect is the greatest safety measure in the Himalayas.
