ABC with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek Overview

If you want to spend many days in the Himalayas and can not go on a high Pass trek like Everest High Pass or Manaslu Larke La Pass. We have a 17-day trekking itinerary in Annapurna Himalaya that covers Poon Hill, ABC, and Mardi Himal.

We designed this trekking itinerary to ensure a gradual ascent, allowing for acclimatization and altitude sickness prevention. Each day, as you trek to Poon Hill, ABC, and Mardi Himal, you'll gain confidence and ample time to savor the breathtaking mountain views. The three trekking destinations of the Annapurna region are:

Ghorepani Poon Hill

Ghorepani is a lovely village located 2,874 meters above sea level, surrounded by Rhododendron trees and snow-capped mountains. Home to the Gurung and Magar communities, Ghorepani is famous for its beauty. Many tourists visit this village every year to enjoy its beauty and tranquility.

Likewise, Poon Hill is a viewpoint situated above Ghorepani village. You will reach in around an hour's walking distance from Ghorepani. From the top of Poon Hill, you see a gorgeous sunrise and 17+ mountains, and Poon Hill is a short trekking program itself.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)

Annapurna Base Camp is the lap of the tenth-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Annapurna. It is located at 4,130 meters above sea level. Trekking to ABC is exhilarating. You will follow a forested route and traverse the Annapurna Sanctuary.

On the way, you will also come across the infamous Hinku Cave and Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Unlike the world-renowned Everest Base Camp trek, you can spend the night at the Annapurna Base Camp, which makes it very special.

Mardi Himal Base Camp

Mardi Himal is located east of Annapurna Base Camp. It is a 5,587-meter peak situated beneath the towering Annapurna and Fishtail mountains. Trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp has gained massive popularity in the last two to three years.

This entry-level offbeat trek offers stunning mountain views and a refreshing break from the crowded ABC and Poon Hill trek routes. It is also a moderately difficult trek, so all ages of trekkers can do it. The trek route is not established like others, so the experience is raw.

Poon Hill, ABC, and Mardi Himal Trek Difficulties

ABC with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal, while moderate in difficulty, will see you trekking for almost 13 days. It's a journey that can be physically demanding, but it's also a chance to get used to walking 5 to 6 hours a day and to push your limits. Every day will be an adventure, and each step forward will bring a sense of accomplishment.

Every day will be adventurous and packed with new things to look forward to. During the trekking duration, you must adjust to the mountain lifestyle, which can be challenging for some trekkers.

As this is a long trek, we highly recommend that trekkers pack all the essentials for the journey. You will go above 4,000 meters twice on this trek, which is comparatively lower than the famous Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks.

Altitude sickness chances are low because you will spend a reasonable amount of time traversing low elevations and gradually ascending. Still, we highly suggest trekkers follow preventive measures. Beginner trekkers may consider the Annapurna Base Camp trek with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal.

However, ensure you are physically and mentally ready to spend a long time in the mountains. If inactive, train for 4 to 6 weeks before the trek starts. Exercise, hike, and take long walks to build strength and stamina.

The porter usually walks ahead of the group, and the guide is with you. In your day pack, pack essential things like a water bottle, snacks, money, documents, lip balm, SPF, etc. You will carry the day pack. There will be many ascents and descents during the trek, so we recommend getting trekking poles.

Trekking poles will help you maintain your balance on rugged terrain. Similarly, we recommend that trekkers wear trekking boots during the trek to avoid blisters. As it is a long trek, get a solar charger, download podcasts and music, and carry some traveler games to keep yourself entertained.

Best Time for the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek 17 Days

The Best Time for ABC with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal trek are spring and Autumn seasons. The time you choose for the trek is crucial to maximize mountain views, enjoy favorable trails, experience the natural beauty of your trek, and complete the trek successfully. However, you can do ABC with Poon Hill and Mardi Himal trek every season with some extra preparation, such as winter and summer or monsoon season.

ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek in Spring Season (March, April, and May)

Spring is prime time for the combined ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal trek in Nepal. Spring offers comfortable temperatures and vibrant natural scenery. The daytime temperatures typically range between 0-20 degrees Celsius. Clear blue skies characterize the weather and provide unobstructed views of the majestic Himalayan ranges, making it a visual treat for trekkers.

March through May brings a vibrant transformation to the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal trails—the rhododendrons flower blooms in full in spring. The forest along the trail is colorful with vivid red, pink, and white flowers. This natural spectacle adds a magical dimension to your trek. The trails during spring are typically dry and well-maintained, making navigation less challenging even for less experienced trekkers.

The spring also offers the advantage of longer daylight hours, allowing more flexible trekking schedules and ample time to appreciate the stunning landscapes. The weather pattern is relatively predictable during spring, with mornings and early afternoons remaining clear.

ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek in Autumn Season (September, October and November)

Autumn is the peak trekking season in Nepal. From late September through November, the weather conditions reach their optimal state for the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal routes. Following the monsoon, the landscape appears freshly washed, with exceptional clarity for mountain views and best for photography.

Autumn offers the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek at its best. The daytime temperatures hover around a comfortable 15 degrees Celsius, and the stable weather offers consistently clear skies and minimal precipitation, making it an ideal time for the trek.

October is the absolute prime time within this season and offers the perfect balance of comfortable temperatures and unparalleled visibility. The air quality during autumn is exceptional, offering crisp, unobstructed views of the Annapurna range, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and numerous other peaks that dominate the horizon throughout the trek.

Shoulder Seasons: Early Spring (February to Early March)

The Shoulder season is from mid-February to early March and offers an enjoyable alternative for trekkers seeking fewer crowds on the trail and enjoying relatively favorable weather conditions. During this transitional period, temperatures begin warming from the winter chill, though nights remain cold at higher elevations.

This window represents an excellent compromise for trekkers, as trail conditions are generally manageable with proper equipment, while the number of fellow trekkers remains significantly lower than during peak seasons. The specific recommendation of mid-February to early March for ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek suggests this could be an optimal time for the trek for those prioritizing solitude over perfect weather.

Shoulder Seasons: Late Autumn (Late November to December)

December represents another best shoulder season for the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek. The weather typically remains dry and clear at this time and offers excellent visibility for mountain views. However, temperatures drop significantly, particularly at the higher elevations of the trek.

ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek in Monsoon (June, July and August)

In Nepal, the summer season is from June through mid-September. The summer generally represents the least favorable time for attempting the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek. Nepal experiences significant rainfall, which creates numerous challenges during summer.

The monsoon season, from June through mid-September, presents significant challenges for the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek. The daily rain makes trails muddy and slippery. The muddy and slippery trail makes walking difficult. Additionally, the lower forested sections of the trek become infested with leeches, creating an unpleasant experience.

Additionally, the monsoon season brings elevated risks of landslides and trail damage in the Annapurna region. At the same time, some trekkers do attempt ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek in the monsoon.

ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek in Winter Season (December and January)

The heart of the winter is from mid-December to January in Nepal. The cold and snowfall in winter increase challenges on the ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek. Temperatures at higher elevations drop dramatically, with nighttime temperatures at Annapurna Base Camp below -15 degrees.

Snowfall is common in winter, blocking the higher passes of the trail. Many teahouses along the route close during winter.

Winter ABC, Poon Hill, and Mardi Himal Trek should be considered by experienced trekkers with proper winter equipment and preferably with experienced guides familiar with winter conditions in the area.
