Enjoy stunning views of the eighth-highest mountain in the world

Most trekkers don't seem to realize that Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Trekking to Manaslu is exploring life, nature, and adventure around this beautiful mountain. You will see stunning views of Mt. Manaslu throughout the trek and will hear a lot of climbing legends of this mountain.

Mount Manaslu, along with many other incredible Himalayan mountains

Manaslu region is not only home to Mount Manaslu but also many other incredible mountains like Shringi Himal, Simnang Himal, Boudha Himal, Samdo Peak, Naike Peak, etc. In addition to these mountains, you will also see wonderful views of Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Ganesh Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II.

The trail is spread across varying altitudes, so you will witness diverse landscapes

Talking about the views, the landscapes you will see on the Manaslu trekking from Pokhara are also great. As you ascend from Machha Khola to Larkya La Pass, diverse landscapes will unfold in front of you, and the views will only get better as each day passes by.

Lush hills, cascading waterfalls, rivers, and picturesque villages change to alpine meadows, barren terrain, glacial moraines, and snow-capped mountains.

Traverse an adventurous route through dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and a high mountain pass

Manaslu trekking is great because of its adventurous trail that involves hiking through dense rhododendrons and pine forests, crossing high alpine meadows, traversing beautiful glacial valleys, and crossing a high mountain pass called Larkya La.

Not only that, but you will also cross thrilling wooden and suspension bridges on the way and go on side hikes. Likewise, you will also cross landslide-prone areas and navigate steep, narrow tracks.

Discover exotic flora and fauna of the Manaslu Conservation Area

The Manaslu trek from Pokhara route also goes through the Manaslu Conservation Area, which offers a unique blend of the Himalayan ecosystem and wildlife. As we have already mentioned, the views change with the change in altitude- it is because of vegetation differences at different elevations.

The region features diverse vegetation from rhododendron, pine, oak, and bamboo forests to medicinal herbs and rare plants like Panchaule and Yarsagumba.

Likewise, Manaslu is also home to rare animals such as Himalayan tahr, snow leopard, blue sheep, musk deer, red panda, etc, along with 200 species of birds. Spotting rare animals is not common, so you do not have to worry about your safety from them.

Manaslu Trek from Pokhara is one of the best offbeat, remote treks in Nepal

The Manaslu trek is not as famous as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and Annapurna Circuit, so not many travelers choose this route.

Travelers who want to explore beyond the famous trails and discover untouched corners of the Himalayas will love this trek. The Manaslu trek is hands down the best offbeat, remote trek in Nepal in 2025.

Less commercialized trek and no crowd on trail

It must be clear to you by now that few trekkers visit the Manaslu trek, so the trails are not as busy as Everest and Annapurna. You will enjoy peace and solitude even during the peak trekking seasons.

Experience the warm hospitality and unique lifestyle of the locals

You will meet the Gurung community in the lower part of the Manaslu region. Likewise, the upper area is home to the Nubri community and Tibetan refugees. The locals will welcome you with a warm heart and excellent hospitality. While spending nights in tea houses, you will see their lifestyle and practices closely.

The Manaslu region is highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, and there are many ancient monasteries, stupas, and mani walls on the trail

The majority of locals practice Tibetan Buddhism in the Manaslu region. One of the main reasons for this is the proximity to Tibet. Manaslu borders Tibet. During trekking, you will come across many ancient monasteries, mani walls, and stupas.

Likewise, you can also see colorful prayer flags fastened all around the trail. Locals believe it will keep them and the travelers safe in the mountains.

Excellent side hike options to Pun Gyen Gompa, Birendra Lake, and Manaslu Base Camp

You will explore Pun Gyen Gompa and Manaslu Base Camp during your time in Sama Gaon. Birendra Lake falls on the way to Manaslu Base Camp. Hiking to these destinations makes the journey even more adventurous and thrilling.

Likewise, you also have the option to hike to Rui La Pass while in Samdo village. This hike will take you close to an old trade route to Tibet and the present raw, untouched section of the Manaslu region.

Cross the demanding Larkya La Pass that connects the Manaslu region with the Annapurna region

Crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106 m/16,752 ft) is a big deal. The determination, effort, and endurance it demands are no joke. You will literally feel like you are climbing a peak.

Is Manaslu trekking from Pokhara suitable for you?

Manaslu trekking from Pokhara is no doubt ideal for travelers who are already in Pokhara or going to be there soon and want to start the trek there. Likewise, you can drive back to Pokhara or Kathmandu as per your choice at the end of the trek.

  • Apart from the above reason, the Manaslu trek suits trekkers with previous high-altitude experience and good fitness. It is not an easy trek and definitely not recommended to beginner trekkers.
  • If you are a beginner trekker, we highly recommend considering trails like Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal base camp, Langtang Valley, etc, for your first trek in the Himalayas. Please do not underestimate the challenges of the Manaslu trek.

How should you prepare for the Manaslu trek from Pokhara?

Manaslu trek requires good fitness and previous high-altitude experience, so you have to work on these two things before starting the trek. You can gain high-altitude experience through day hikes or short treks near you.

Likewise, to become fit for the journey, you have to improve your stamina, strength, and endurance. Cardio exercises, strength training, and regular long walks are highly effective.

Similarly, prepare your mind to be flexible and patient. It will make your trek very satisfying. Our personal advice is to read a few blogs and watch videos on the Manaslu trek. It will help you prepare mentally for the trip.

Finally, budget your expenses and start saving for the trek. Note that there will be expenses beyond the Manaslu trek cost, such as travel insurance, shopping, international flight to/from Nepal, tips, etc.

What is it like trekking with a guide and porter? Do you have to tip a guide and porter?

We will provide a professional guide and native porter for the Manaslu trek. Trekking with them will greatly enhance your overall experience and ensure your safety in the remote mountains.

Our guides are active trekkers who have mapped and led hundreds of trekkers in Manaslu and other trekking regions in Nepal. Trekking with them ensures you are on the right route, getting excellent cultural exposure, no language barrier, and a hassle-free journey.

Likewise, porters carry a duffel bag for you, which allow you to trek freely and safely. One porter carries duffel bags of two trekkers (10-11 kg each trekker). Porters are usually natives of the regions, so their insights are priceless.

Similarly, the motivation and push of your guide and porter will help you complete the trek, and they will also keep you entertained with their jokes and dances. Tipping guide and porter at the end of their service is a common practice in Nepal and is greatly appreciated.

As they do not make much, tips help them a lot. You can tip whatever amount you want. Consider their service and hard work. A 10% to 20% of the package cost is a decent tip.

Extend the trek to hidden Tsum Valley and make your journey even more adventurous

Tsum Valley is a hidden valley in the Manaslu region. On the way from Jagat to Deng, the route to Tsum Valley separates. This valley is even more untouched and authentic than Manaslu Circuit. You need a solid 5 to 7 days extra if you want to explore Tsum Valley.

Mu Gompa is the highest point in Tsum Valley. It is an ancient monastery. Likewise, Ranchen Gompa and Milarepa's Cave are two attractions in this valley. You can also access the rarely visited Ganesh Himal Base Camp in Tsum Valley.

Why is Manaslu Circuit a restricted area, and what foreigners should know about it?

Manaslu Circuit is a restricted area in Nepal for foreigners because it has a border with Tibet, and the area is also ecologically sensitive. The restriction on the region for foreign travelers allows the Nepal government to monitor and control movements around the border and maintain security.

The restricted area permit is the most expensive trekking permit in Nepal, so it also allows the control of the flow of tourists in the region and preserves the flora and fauna. There are some strict rules regarding restricted area trekking. Please read them below:

  • Foreigners cannot enter restricted areas without a licensed Nepali travel company.
  • A licensed guide must accompany them.
  • The group must have at least two trekkers (without including a guide and porter).

Manaslu trek from Pokhara difficulty

The Manaslu trek from Pokhara is remote, offbeat, and challenging. This trek is not for first-time trekkers or those without previous trekking experience. Several factors like terrain, weather, altitude, and trek duration determine the difficulty of any trek in the Himalayas.

But your physical fitness and previous high-altitude experience make the trek either achievable or demanding. The Manaslu trek route is rugged, steep, and rocky. You have to be careful while walking.

The trail also includes landslide-prone areas, loose scree, and snow patches. There are many long ascends and descends throughout the trek. Every day, you will walk 6 to 7 hours, depending on your pace. Therefore, you have to be in good shape to enjoy the journey.

Larkya La Pass is the toughest part of the Manaslu trek. To cross this pass, you will walk 8 to 9 hours and navigate steep slopes. Likewise, you will experience diverse climates and rise in altitude every day.

The air will thin as you get higher, so acclimatization becomes crucial. You not only have to walk long hours on rugged terrain but also adjust to a changing environment and basic services.

Altitude sickness and tips to avoid it

Altitude sickness is caused by high altitude gain in a short time. During the Manaslu trek, you ascend 5,000 meters above sea level, which is not common for most trekkers. Therefore, acclimatization is the key to avoiding altitude sickness and enjoying the trek.

You will gain under 500 to 600 meters daily until you reach Larkya La Pass (5,106 m/16,752 ft). With the change in altitude, the environment and vegetation also change. So, every day will hold something unique for you.

Our Manaslu trek itinerary has an acclimatization day in Sama Gaon, and you will also have ample time to rest and recover while trekking. By maintaining your pace and keeping yourself hydrated, you can lower the risk of altitude sickness.

Likewise, be aware of symptoms such as headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and insomnia. These are the early signs of altitude sickness. If you get them, inform your guide and get first aid. We recommend not having any medicine without your guide's knowledge.

How is the network on the Manaslu trek route?

On the Manaslu trek, you will go off-grid. There will be many days without WiFi or a mobile network. Between Arughat and Jagat, the mobile network is patchy, and WiFi is also slow.

Above Jagat and till Sama Gaon, both mobile and WiFi networks are unreliable. Likewise, above Sama Gaon and till Bimthang, there will be no network.

You will get a signal once you descend from Bimthang and reach Dharapni. The Manaslu trek is one of the best ways to do a digital detox, so use this opportunity to unwind and not stress about the network, check detail Internet and telephone guide in Manaslu.
