Introduction to the Everest High Passes Trek 21 Days

Everest High Passes Trek is not merely a trek but a grand adventure through the depths of the Khumbu region that tests the limits and pays you with the most breathtaking Himalaya panoramas. This adventure circuit will get you through three of the most world-renowned high passes in the Everest region that are Renjo La (5,360 m) Pass, Cho La (5,420 m) Pass, and Kongma La (5,540 m) Pass, which provide unsurpassed views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

The fact that you walk to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and Kala Patthar (5,644 m) and explore the Gokyo Village (4,750 m) and Gokyo Lakes (ranging from 4,700 m to 5,000 m) makes the Everest Three High Passes Trek itinerary brilliant.

The Everest High Pass Adventure trek challenges trekkers to tap into their high endurance levels and experience a profound sense of accomplishment. The beauty of climbing Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m), Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), and even a visit to the Hotel Everest View (3,962 m) makes your trip even more magical. The initial part of the Everest Three High Passes Trek follows the classic EBC trek route, so you also get to explore the iconic villages, including Namche Bazaar (3,440 m).

Everest Three High Pass Trek is like climbing a peak itself. However, no technical climbing is required, nor is any climbing gear involved; this trek requires top physical shape and mental stamina. You get to explore the hidden corners of the Khumbu region on a three High Passes trek and witness the most stunning mountain views.

Everest High Pass Himalayan Journey is fit for experienced trekkers who can walk at least 6 to 8 hours a day on steep, rugged uphill trails and can resist thin air and limited services. The other part of the Three High Passes trek is about experiencing local culture and interacting with the locals. As you spend a long time in the mountains, you will learn much about Sherpas and people from other communities like Rai, Limbu, and Bhotiya. While trekking, you visit ancient monasteries like Khumjung (3,790 m), Tengboche (3,860 m), and Pangboche (3,985 m), offering unique cultural experiences that will pique your curiosity and interest.

Everest High Passes is not just a trek, but an opportunity to explore the unknown nooks and crannies of Everest and embark on a lifetime journey.

Why Everest High Passes Trek in 2025 and 2026

What better time to realize the Everest High Passes Trek than in 2025 and 2026? These forthcoming seasons offer ideal trekking experiences and thrilling adventures of exploring the Khumbu region of Nepal at its best. There are reasons that you should do the Everest high pass trek in 2025 and 2026, and some of them are:

The Timeless charm of Kathmandu and never-ending temples

Begin your journey to Nepal with Kathmandu, the capital city, also known as the City of Temples. The city has shrines and Palaces of ancient times in every corner. Before leaving Nepal, be sure to visit and explore the country's main historical monuments.

To ensure you visit as many tourist sites as possible, we spend two full days in Kathmandu at the beginning and end of the journey. You explore the town's palace, Kathmandu Durbar Square. The tour also leads you to the famous Monkey Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and museums and galleries. It is the best cultural experience before heading to the mountains.

Ideal Weather and Trail Conditions

Both years fall in Nepal's golden trekking seasons, which are spring (March-May) and autumn (April–November). You can anticipate the clear-as-a-crystal mountain views, consistent weather, and brimming rhododendrons or fall colors on the trail. It will be like dreaming as you cross the fabled Kongmala, Cho La, and Renjo La passes.

Thrilling Lukla flights

Get ready to fly in one of the greatest flights in the world. You'll have the most exciting flight of your life, flying in and out of Lukla. It's a 35-minute flight between Kathmandu (1,400 m) and Lukla (2,860 m). The flight offers spectacular aerial sights of the Himalayan mountains. Lukla Airport's location, elevation, and tiny runway have made it popular among travelers and aviators.

The lush rhododendron forests and picturesque villages

Everest Three High Passes Trek begins with a gentle walk through lush forest and later joins dense alpine forests. Forests of rhododendron, pine, fir, juniper, and birch enhance the lower trekking routes. The diverse flora and fauna along the way add a sense of wilderness to the journey.

Likewise, the trail goes through many small and large villages. Some villages are works of art, to be honest. The surrounding views boost their beauty. Our major night stops are Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Chhukung, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, Dzongla, Thangnak, Gokyo Village, Lumde, and Thame. These enchanting towns are awaited here, where gorgeous countryside is complemented by warm Sherpa hospitality.

Mythical Mountain shores

Traversing Kongma La (5,540m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m) will offer you privileged, panoramic scenes of the Himalayas. On the trail, observe giant mountains such as Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), and Makalu (8,463 m). The dramatic skyline is capped by other more impressive stunners such as Ama Dablam, Pumori, Nuptse, and Taboche.

Secret Wonders of the Himalaya

The route divulges the natural beauty and wonders: emerald Gokyo Lakes, thundering waterfalls, frozen glaciers, gushing gorges, and pure moraines. The landscape changes with every step as you ascend higher: green hills are replaced by an austere and enigmatic high-mountainous environment, and the effort is even more worthwhile.

True, the Sherpa Culture and warm Hospitality

You will meet the most legendary people, the Sherpas, and also experience their rich traditions. The natives of the Everest region are very friendly and welcoming. They run the lodges and other services along the trail, which make our journey somewhat bearable. Staying in local teahouses run by native people will introduce you to the way of life in Khumbu, and you can even visit ancient monasteries such as Tengboche, Pangboche, and Khumjung.

As we are all familiar with the Sherpas, the Everest Three High Passes Trek Voyage offers a unique opportunity to experience their lifestyle and spend time with them.

A journey for True Adventurers

The Everest Three High Passes Trek itinerary is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a challenging adventure. No technical climbing or gear will be required, but you will need stamina to hike 6- 8 hour days on difficult terrain. You will not only survive the trails, but you will also have a wonderful time with the help of the professionals at Outfitter Himalaya.

Expert and reliable on-field crew

Our team at Outfitter Himalaya is unparalleled in the industry. We have hand-picked the finest guides and porters, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout the trek. Our tested itinerary guarantees the best trekking experience.

Mountain views and other Himalayan wonders

Despite all the hurdles involved in the Everest Three High Passes Odyssey, this trek is the best option for witnessing jaw-dropping mountain landscapes. Very few trekkers cross the three high passes in the Khumbu region, so only a few have seen the dramatic scenery from the top. Numerous mountains are visible throughout the trail, including the eight-thousand-meter peaks Mt. Everest (8,849 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m), and Mt. Makalu (8,463 m).

Some other famous giants you see are Nuptse (7,861 m), AmaDablam (6,812 m), Island Peak (6,160 m), Pumori (7,161 m), Cholatse (6,440 m), Taboche (6,495 m), Thamserku (6,608 m), and Kangtega (6,782 m). The lower part of the trail is covered with lush green hills, and the upper part boasts barren rocky hills.

Then come other Himalayan wonders, like gorgeous waterfalls, lakes, streams, rhododendron forests, moraines, glaciers, gorges, and icefalls. As you approach the high altitude, the scenery only gets alluring.

Fewer Crowds, More Serenity

Whereas the Everest Base Camp route is crowded, the Everest Three Passes Trekking route is less crowded and offers a more remote experience. Reservations in 2025/2026 will help you escape the rush after the pandemic and have a more exclusive experience in the Himalayas.

Festivals and Culture Highlights

2025 and 2026 coincide with the great Himalayan festivals, such as the Mani Rimdu at the Tengboche Monastery, adding a cultural spark to your walk.

Plenty of time to prepare

Early planning in 2025 and 2026 will help you be physically ready and enable you to find the best guides and itineraries to complete this arduous yet satisfying adventure. Embark on the Everest High Passes Trek of 2025 or 2026 and experience the trip of a lifetime- cross three high passes, visit Everest Base Camp, as well as visit Gokyo lakes and capture photographs that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Everest Three High Passes Itinerary

This fabulous Everest high Pass journey begins in Kathmandu. We explore this bustling city's stupas, temples, palaces, and local bazaars and catch a thrilling flight to Lukla on the third day. The first few days of the trail follow the famous route to Everest base camp through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche.

From Dingboche, we ascend to Chhukung and cross the Kongma La pass before descending towards Lobuche village. The trail climbs to Everest base camp and Kala Patthar.  From here onwards, we leave the crowd and embark on a further remote/rugged route to Gokyo Valley. But first, we must conquer the glacial trail to Dzongla and cross the second pass, Cho La.

It's time to explore the stunning Gokyo Lakes, rich in substantial religious significance. We hike to Gokyo Ri and soon cross the last pass, Renjo La. Trekking through Thame, we walk to Namche Bazaar and retrace the trail to Lukla.

Solo Everest High Pass Trek

A solo trek to the Everest High Passes is certainly exciting. Most solo trekkers like the freedom to walk at their own pace, decide their halting points and relish the solitude of the mountains.

Imagine yourself standing tall all alone at the summit of Kongma La (5,540m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m) just with the Himalayan wind and the hills and mountain ranges covered with snow as your companion. It seems like the adventure of all times- but is it a good idea?

Although trekking the Everest High Passes alone is exhilarating, there are certain issues peculiar to this trek. In this route, it is very important that we hire a guide or a porter.

Everest Three High Passes Trek is the toughest trip to the Himalayas. It passes through steep, high-altitude treks such as Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo Lawhere the trail conditions may not be easy-traveling-especially due to unfavourable weather-either in the off seasons or during the bad weather.

The route passes over three passes above 5,000 meters, where snow and ice on the treacherous trail and poor weather conditions may make parts of the route very dangerous, frequently the Cho La and Kongma La. In other sections where there are possibly fewer trekkers, it may be difficult to navigate, and altitude sickness may result since the air is thin.

Top it off with the physical necessity of moving 6-8 hours per day across rough ground, self-carrying your own gear, and some logistical management. Moreover, individual trekkers also have to bear extra expenses in terms of lodging and food because they do not split rooms or meals with twin.

Having a guide on your trail besides keeping you safe can give you rich experiences about the area you are traveling, culture of people, their way of doing things and also provides you free travel. Also, it is priceless to have an emergency team on your side, those that have experience.

In Lukla, you will see our friendly porters who will accompany you on the upcoming trek. After this, we gradually move downhill, then pass through dense forests, cross bridges over running rivers, and several beautiful, typical Sherpa villages, to finally emerge at a lower altitude. The air is fresh, and there is an echo of spinning prayer wheels and the smell of pine.

Passing by Ghat village (2,530 m), we trek for an hour to reach Phakding. This evening you will sleep in the tranquillity of the village of Phakding (2,610 m), on the bank of the river Dudh Koshi, in preparation for the higher elevations into the Khumbu.

From Monjo, we trek in a protected area called Sagarmatha National Park. From here onwards, the route gradually follows through dense forests and crosses thrilling hanging bridges. Continuing to trek higher, we reach an elevation of 3,440 meters above sea level. So, an acclimatization day is crucial at this point.

Additionally, a rest day in Namche Bazaar allows you to explore nearby famous sites, such as Syangboche Airstrip and the Everest View Hotel. We hike to these places to witness breathtaking views of mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtega.

Today, we will cross the first pass of our trek, Kongma La. From Chhukung, we have two routes to Kongma La. We walk in an isolated area and ascend a hill northwest of Chhkung, following the moraine of the Nuptse Glacier. Another option is to descend to Bibre and take a high trail above the Niyang Khola. On the way, we pass by small frozen lakes and steeply ascend over loose scree to the top of the pass.

The top is marked with colorful prayer flags. The feeling of conquering the first pass and getting rewarded with heavenly scenery will motivate us to walk further. Further, we do the final descent to Lobuche. It's a tricky section of the trail that climbs the moraine on the far side and passes by the Khumbu Glacier.

Max Altitude: 5,535m / 18,159 ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerAccommodation: Guest houseDuration: 8-9 hoursDistance: 11km / 6 milesTravel Mode: Walking

Max Altitude: 5,545m / 18,192 ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerAccommodation: Guest houseDuration: 7-8 hoursDistance: 10km / 6 milesTravel Mode: Walking

Leaving Dzongla, we embark on an adventurous route today. The trail goes west and descends through landslide areas. We walk on a glacial path and reach the top of the basin. Soon, we cross Cho La Lake and witness breathtaking views of Ama Dablam. From here, we descend to Thangnak. The downhill route is rocky and ice-covered, so be cautious while descending.

Max Altitude: 5,370m / 17,618 ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerAccommodation: Guest houseDuration: 8-9 hoursDistance: 10km / 6 milesTravel Mode: Walking

The trail from Thangnak leads to the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's biggest glacier. From here, we walk, enjoying stunning mountain views, past several small lakes, and to the Gokyo village.

It's a beautiful village nestled amidst snow-capped mountains at the shore of an alpine lake.

Max Altitude: 4,790m / 15,715 ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerAccommodation: Guest houseDuration: 3-4 hoursDistance: 4km / 2 milesTravel Mode: Walking

We spent another acclimatization day in Gokyo village and hiked to Gokyo Ri (5,350 m). It's a few hours' walk from Gokyo village to Gokyo Ri on a steep, rugged path. The viewpoint offers a surreal view of Cho Oyu, Island Peak, Gyachukang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, Tawache, and many other mountains. Later, we'll explore the Gokyo Lakes and spend the rest of the day with the locals.

Today, we'll cross the third and last pass, Renjo La. We follow a gray screen from Gokyo above the lake's northwest corner. The trail descends from Gokyo Valley, and leaving the main trail, we follow an uphill route that leads to Renjo La pass. The walk is strenuous, but once we reach the top of the pass, the crisp wind and phenomenal mountain views will make us forget the pain. From here, we descend to Thame to spend the night.

We also highly recommend that you visit the local market. In the evening, meet us for a farewell dinner.

Essential Information

Everest High Passes Trek Difficulty

Everest Three High Passes Hiking is a demanding yet rewarding adventure in the Himalayas. Spanning 17+ days of walking in the Himalayas and covering approximately. This 160-185 km (99-115 miles) trek pushes your endurance as you pass over three high mountain passes, including Kongma La (5,540m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m).

Everest High Pass Trekking begins through the forests on well-cut paths, but the elevation changes, and the path becomes steeper, rugged, and packed with loose boulders and rocks. Several sections involve extensive, gradual ascents and require caution when traveling with a downhill progression over glacial moraines.

Everest Three High Passes Trek is one of the longest treks in the Himalayas. Each day of trekking lasts on average 6-8 hours, with certain days entailing even more brutal trekking. It's an incredibly demanding journey that requires muscular fitness.

Another issue is a high altitude. You will hike at altitudes exceeding 5,000 meters on multiple occasions, increasing your risk of developing altitude sickness and necessitating acclimatization. The trekkers also have to adjust to simple amenities in remote locations; access to food and amenities becomes scarce and costly as you ascend higher.

As the elevation increases, minimal modern facilities become scarce and expensive, and the risks of altitude sickness are always present.

The Everest Three High Pass trek requires being physically fit with good legs and a strong mental state. One should be an experienced multi-day trekker with experience at high altitudes. Although this trek does not require any technical climbing abilities or gear, it is better suited for experienced hikers who want a pure adventure experience and aim to reach a thrilling, adrenaline-filled Everest high pass adventure. This experience will push you to your limits and reward you with some of the most beautiful mountains that nature has ever created.

  • Achieve Endurance and Strength: Incorporate cardiovascular activities such as running, cycling, and stair climbing to boost your stamina. Add a bit of leg, core, and upper body strength training to prepare for the challenges of lengthy and difficult days in the mountains. You have to focus on building stamina and core body strength.
  • Training with Hikes and Gears: Put some mileage in your hiking boots by going on short hikes - your feet will be able to last over long days. It is not good to begin the hike with new boots.
  • Consult Your Doctor: If you have a medical history, consult with a physician about high-altitude trekking and ensure that you are fit to participate in intense sports activities.
  • Smartly Gear Up: Learn more about the essential gear for trekking and what's important for your specific type of trek. Even forgetting things need not be a problem, as Thamel in Kathmandu offers all the best options for rentals and purchases, including down jackets and sleeping bags.

You should have previous trekking experience and be in good health, with a strong desire and stamina.

Permits Required for Everest High Pass Trek

You will need some Everest High Pass Trek permits: Sagarmatha National Park entry permits, and Khumbu-PasangLhamu Rural Municipality permits.TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) is now included in the Khumbu Permit.

Best Time to do the Everest High Pass Trek

The best seasons (time) to do the Everest High Pass Trek in Nepal are autumn and spring. However, you can do it throughout the year, but certain seasons are more suitable than others for enhancing your experience and safety. Here is the breakdown of why.

Everest High Pass Trek in Spring (March to May) - The Golden Mean

One of the finest seasons to do the Everest Three High Passes Trek is spring. The temperature is mild, and warmer seasons have more daylight, allowing for comfortable trekking even at higher altitudes. In the lower trails, rhododendron forests bloom throughout, and the skies tend to be clear, giving a magnificent view of the mountains. The passes start melting their snow, and crossing such passes as Cho La and Kongma La becomes less icy and still exciting. Ideal in steady weather and colourful landscapes.

Everest High Pass Trek in Autumn (September to November) -Crystal-Clear Views

You will get the best views in autumn, when the air is fresh and crisp after the monsoon. The paths are dust-free, and temperatures are cool, which is great for trekking at altitude. Days are sunny, nights are cool, creating perfect conditions for crossing Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La Passes. This is an ideal season due to the panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, in addition to crossing three high passes.

You will also have the opportunity to experience vibrant cultural moments, such as the Mani Rimdu festival, in the Khumbu area. This season also coincides with Nepal’s major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, adding a cultural charm to your trek.

Ideal picture-taking situation, predictable weather, and cultural focal points.

Everest High Pass Trek in Winter (December to February)- Quiet trails, and snowy beauty

The winter encompasses a beauty of its own in the Everest High Passes Adventure. Trails are quieter and less crowded, and everything is covered in snow, making it a truly magical experience. Nevertheless, the passes such as Cho La and Kongma La may be blocked by heavy snow, and the temperatures at night are well below the freezing point. Appropriate equipment and knowledge of trekking in cold weather are needed.

It can be done by experienced, well-equipped, and prepared trekkers who want to be alone.

  • Difficulties: extremely cold, with a high likelihood of snow closures on the paths.

Monsoon (June to August) -Green and Adventurous

The monsoon, often considered the least preferred season for the Everest High Pass Trek, has its benefits. Lush Green, wild flowers, and tumbling waterfalls make the lower Khumbu take on a life of its own. Trails are less crowded, and you have a much better personal experience with nature and people. Nonetheless, storms and heavy rain can cover the roads with slippery mud, and flights to Lukla may be postponed due to poor visibility, which makes the trek more challenging and risky.

Ideal for adventurous trekkers who prefer less traffic and vibrant scenery.

  • Difficulties: lower trail leeches, cloud-covered mountains, and moist conditions.

We suggest spring or autumn 2025 or 2026 to have the best experience. However, in case you are a well-established and sufficiently well-trained trekker, winter and monsoon can give you a different view of this most famous path as well. Suppose your schedule only allows you to visit Nepal during the summer or winter. In that case, Outfitter Himalaya is very happy to arrange a customized itinerary to plan the most rewarding adventure possible.
