Overview

Introduction to Renjo La Pass Trek in Everest

Welcome to the Renjo La Pass trek, one of the most spectacular yet lesser-trekked high passes in the Everest region. This remarkable trek takes you off the beaten path, away from the bustling EBC trails, and into a world of tranquil Sherpa villages, glacial valleys, and turquoise lakes.

Everest Renjo La pass trail crosses the high mountain pass called Renjo La, as the package's name suggests. Unlike the crowded EBC trails, Renjo La is a quiet, remote trek in the Everest region that explores beautiful mountain villages, lush alpine forests, valleys, streams, lakes, and glaciers.

The Renjo La Pass Trek is not simply a high pass crossing. It offers you a chance to admire the pristine beauty of Gokyo Lakes (4,700 -5,000m), a series of holy turquoise lakes at the foot of snow-capped mountains, and take a walk across the largest glacier in Nepal, the Ngozumpa. This journey will be memorable because when you take a sunrise hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357m), the panorama of the Everest range will leave your jaw open.

The Renjo La Pass trek has balanced adventurous and spiritual elements. When the thrilling landing at Lukla airport and the giant mountains overwhelm you, the friendly locals and their rich cultural heritage will calm you down. The fascinating Sherpa culture and heart-warming Himalayan landscapes come complimentary on the Renjo La trek. You can interact with the Sherpa community, learn about their traditions, and visit ancient monasteries.

The Renjo La walking trail, which passes through villages like Dole (4,200 m) and Machhermo (4,470 m), makes the Renjo La Pass hiking one of the best Everest trek packages. You will not be following the famous Everest trail visited by thousands of trekkers. The delicate chirping of the birds, the freshness of the mountains, and the soothing aroma of the forests will help you unwind and relax your heart. The simple yet meaningful interactions with locals, their stories, and their lifestyle make the journey more enjoyable.

And how can we forget the majestic mountains and peaks that become constant companions of travellers in the Everest region? You'll witness the grandeur of Mt. Everest (8,849 m), Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Mt. AmaDablam (6,812 m), Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m), dominating the skyline, creating a Himalayan panorama few places on earth can rival.

Where is Renjo La Pass?

Renjo La Pass (5,360m) is a high mountain pass in the Everest (Khumbu) region of Nepal. Renjo La Pass is located within the Sagarmatha National Park in Solukhumbu, Nepal, far into the depths of the Everest region (coordinates: 27.9614®N, 8606936 " E).

It is north of Namche Bazaar. It runs between the serene Gokyo Valley and the more distant Thame Valley, providing trekkers with an opportunity to hike through the desolate panorama of alpine settings, offering an extended view of Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and the impressive Ngozumpa Glacier, which is considered the longest glacier in the Himalayas.

It is a smaller-scale pass that is part of the more popular Three Passes Trek, but there is a reason to choose it as an individual track in case someone wants fewer people around. Local Sherpas perceive this pass not only as a physical entry point but also as a cultural connection between the two valleys, with their distinct traditions and histories.

How to reach Renjo La Pass?

The trip to Renjo La Pass begins in Kathmandu, starting with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. Out of Lukla, we descend to Phakding village to spend the night and acclimatize. Then, trekkers approach Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa town where the majority of travelers spend two nights to acclimatize. It then ascends through villages such as Dole and Machhermo to Gokyo Valley, where the Gokyo Lakes, with their turquoise colour, reflect the snow-topped mountains on the crystal-clear waters.

The path is a steep uphill climb that begins at Gokyo and leads to Renjo La, where trekkers get to see some of the best panoramic views the Himalayas has to offer. The descent to Thame Valley offers a chance to experience a more serene version of the Khumbu region, with its unique culture and history.

For a solo trekker, this route requires no specialized equipment, except for confidence in trekking at high altitudes and the use of offline maps or GPS applications. Organized groups of trekkers, on the other hand, have the advantage of coordinated logistics and the safety that comes with numbers.

What to expect on the Renja Pass Trek

Planning a Himalayan adventure for 2025 or 2026? The Renjo La Pass Trek is an excellent choice for those seeking stunning scenery, fewer crowds, and a deeper cultural experience in the Everest region. Here's why you shouldn't miss it:

Explore the Untamed Beauty of Sagarmatha National Park

Renjo La Pass Trek will bring you to the very core of the Sagarmatha National Park, which is a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site and which is famous for its perfectly clean alpine ecosystems. Himalayan wildlife, which you might encounter along the way, is the musk deer, the Himalayan tahr, and (with great fortune) the elusive snow leopard as you trek through rich rhododendron forests, alpine pastures, roaring rivers, and ancient glaciers.

With this hike, you will be in touch with pristine wilderness, and we will help you make an eco-friendly trip, which will contribute to local conservation.

Discover Authentic Sherpa Villages

You will also get to experience famous villages such as Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo, and Thame along the trail. Hiking in these villages will provide you with a close-up view of the Sherpa culture, their stone and wooden buildings, as well as old monasteries and hospitality. There will be a sensation of a living Himalayan heritage that most travelers never get to experience with each step.

More adventurous, less-travelled path

Despite the fact that Renjo La Pass belongs to the Everest Three passes, it is the least traveled among them. The trails are even peaceful during the peak seasons of trekking, so you can use all of your senses to enjoy the breathtaking scenery without interference. It is serene, which is why this trip is more unique to the adventurers who want to be alone.

Magnificent Acclimatizing Walks

We have acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Gokyo Village (4,750m) in our itineraries. While in Namche, you will trek to the majestic Hotel Everest View (3,962m) to have a bird's eye view of the mountains. A precocious morning climb in the Gokyo Ri (5,357m) will afford you indelible sunrise sights of four of the highest mountains in the world.

Marvel at the Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La Pass

The Gokyo lakes, being the highest cold and fresh water lakes in the world, are some of the highlights of the trek. These glacial lakes with the color of turquoise are held sacred by people and are declared a Ramsar site. The excitement and the triumph of passing Renjo La Pass (5360m), where you can look across the wide vistas of the Himalaya and down into the tranquility of Thame Valley.

Magnificent Views of the Sunrise and Sunset

Capture the sunrises and sunsets of the golden Himalayas on the highest points, such as Gokyo Ri and knowledgeable ones, like Renjo La Pass itself, which is always a memorable and excellent place for onshore photography.

The Excitement of Passing a High Pass in the Himalaya

Renjo La Pass provides a thrilling feeling of accomplishment after having a rugged experience of climbing, and it also presents a spectacular view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, as well as Cho Oyu.

Ideal for nature lovers and photographers

This hike is a dream for photographers. Stunning blue Gokyo Lakes to the mountains with grand snow-capped mountains, and then the valley, at every bend, there is a postcard.

View Holy Sites in the Himalaya

It will present you with the ancient monasteries, prayer wheels, and holy lakes, and will bring rich spiritual and cultural knowledge.

Combination Alternatives with Other Routes

Renjo La can be attached to Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass or indeed the Three Passes Circuit, any of which will be an epic Himalayan trip.

Local Food Experience On the trail

Experience the traditional Sherpa food and highly fresh and organic Himalayan cuisine in small and welcoming teahouses along the way.

Assistance of our local expert team

Your safety and comfort are top priorities at Outfitter Himalaya. Our indigenous Sherpa porters and trekking guides understand the area well and will not just ensure that your trip is safe, but will also provide some cultural enrichment. They have enough experience to deal with any challenge in a calm and professional way.

Extra Days in Kathmandu to smooth the beginning and End

We are also including two pre- and post-nights that are part of our package in Kathmandu. This will provide you with time to rest after traveling, get ready to start your adventure, and have a guided sightseeing tour of cultural sights in the capital.

Solo Renjo La Pass Trek – Freedom with Caution

Renjo La Pass Trek is a dream for solo adventurers, offering a sense of independence and the chance to move at your own pace. It gives you unmatched freedom. You can stop for photos whenever you like, linger longer at viewpoints, and soak in the peaceful energy of the Himalayas. There are, however, downsides to being alone during a trek, especially above sea level and on poorly traveled trails.

It can sometimes be difficult to know where you are going due to snow or fog. It is even more dangerous when you are alone in an emergency. Therefore, we recommend trekking with a local guide. An on-site guide not only keeps you on track but also adds more depth to your trip by providing cultural knowledge and introducing you to the locals. So, if you decide on solo trekking, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide for safety.

Renjo La Pass with Family- Safe, Scenic, and Unforgettable

Dreaming about an adventure at high altitude with your loved ones? The Renjo La Pass Trek isn't just for seasoned trekkers; families looking forward to spending quality time together in the Everest region will find the Renjo La Pass Trek very rewarding, as it combines immense beauty with a good measure of challenges that will make their experience worthwhile.

Compared to other trails, such as the busier Himalayan ones, Renjo La is not crowded, and your family will have the chance to see the Himalayas in their natural beauty at their own pace.

This hike will take you through the scenic Sherpa villages, lakes, and serene mountains, where you will find an amazing view spot, such as Gokyo Ri, which is the best option for a family that wants to experience both culture and exercise. Although the trek involves climbing a high mountain pass (5,360m), with good planning, acclimatization, and the guidance of our local, experienced guides and porters, it can be achieved by families on guided trips with older children or teenagers who are fit and active.

At Outfitter Himalaya, we specialize in crafting family-friendly Renjo La Pass itineraries designed with children's needs in mind. To ensure every individual on this adventure travels safely and comfortably, we provide additional acclimatization days, a reduced daily walking distance, and comfortable teahouse stops. We ensure that every member of your family, whether young or old, can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Everest region safely and comfortably.

Vacationing as a family is also a fantastic bonding experience, watching sunsets on the mountains with snowcaps, watching grazing yaks on alpine pastures, and having warm, welcoming locals, known as Sherpas, along the way.

Your family will be able to create lifetime memories as our team handles the logistics. The best seasons to trek as a family include spring (March to May) and fall (September to November), when the weather is clear and the temperatures are mild, making them suitable for young trekkers. Our family packages on the Renjo La Pass are custom-made to ensure that all you need to do is sit back and watch as everything unfolds, allowing you to enjoy watching your friends and family have fun together.

Renjo La Pass Trek Altitude, Distance, and Trekking Hours

The distance of the trek varies in length according to the trail you take and the number of days you allot for your trek. The estimated distance is 110 to 120 kilometers (68 to 75 miles).

A Typical Day in the Renjo La Pass Trek

A day starts on the Renjo La Pass Trek with the warm clang of yaks' bells and the aroma of freshly brewed tea wafting through your teahouse early at 6 am. Then, at 7 am, you will have a good breakfast of porridge or Tibetan bread and set out on winding trails with the grandeur of mountains opening on every bend.

Eventually, as the day goes by, you pass through woods, crossing suspension bridges, and you climb higher and higher towards alpine meadows. After 3-4 hours of hiking, you will stop for lunch in a beautiful village with prayer flags fluttering (that make a beautiful sound) in the wind.

The afternoon march would usually transport you to your next overnight staying point, where you can rest, take tea, and share war tales with fellow trekkers by the comfort of the burning fire. Spending the day spying on the stars through the crystal-clear sky of the Himalayas is the best way to conclude the day after dinner. You will then go to bed at 7 pm to charge up for the next day.

Best Time to trek Renjo La Pass

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is a beautiful experience that you can do at almost any time of year, although each of the four seasons has its appeal. That is what you will get:

Renjo La Pass Trek in Spring (March to May)

The Renjo La Pass Trek can be one of the most enjoyable treks in spring. The weather is warm during the day and cool at night, making it ideal for long trekking hours. This is the season when the trails burst into life with colourful blooming rhododendrons and vibrant wildflowers. The skies are clear, blue, and moderate temperatures are ideal for trekking. One can also get great views of Everest, Cho Oyu, and the beautiful Gokyo lakes during this season.

Renjo La Pass Trek in Autumn (November to September)

The most trekking season in Nepal is autumn, which is very suitable for crossing the Renjo La Pass. The weather in the post-monsoon period is cool and clear, offering a breathtaking panorama of the mountains, with freshly washed landscapes that add to the view's splendor. The weather is warm and enjoyable during the day and cool yet bearable at night. It has fair weather and a smaller possibility of rainfall or snow, making it a perfect season for both amateur and professional trekkers.

Renjo La Pass Trek in Winter (December to February)

Winter changes Renjo La Pass into a calm, snow-covered paradise. For individuals seeking a genuine Himalayan adventure, winter offers a serene experience on the Renjo La trail, with fewer crowds. Days are usually sunny, even as temperatures go below zero during the night.

The scenery covered in snow around Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La pass is simply spectacular. The journey to the Everest region during winter can be an enjoyable experience with the right gear and preparation, allowing trekkers to witness the blanket of snow that has been a highlight for experienced trekkers.

Renjo La Pass Trek in Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

Summer brings monsoon rains to Nepal, making the lower trails lush, green, and full of life. It is the season when there is a lot of rainfall in the lower trails and overcast conditions, which tend to block views of the mountain. While the heavy rainfall can lead to slippery paths and occasional leeches in the forests, the upper Everest region, including Gokyo and Renjo La, lies in a partial rain shadow. Nevertheless, in case you are fine with rainy days and prefer a quieter pathway, you could explore trekking as well.

Beyond imagination, the rain-sailed scenery is green and flourishing, and the activity of wildlife is quite flourishing in Sagarmatha National Park. Plus, the waterfalls and rivers are at their fullest, and the meadows bloom with rare alpine flowers. Photographers and outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy summer when the sky is full of dramatic cloud formations and an alternative, mystical scenery in the mountains.

Renjo La Pass Trek Weather and Temperature

The weather of the Renjo La Pass Trek is as dynamic as its landscapes, and just as there are wide variations in weather depending on the season, there are also significant differences between day and night. This high-altitude adventure requires careful planning and packing to prepare for the diverse conditions that prevail throughout the year.

One of the most preferred seasons for the Renjo La Pass Trek is spring, which typically spans from March to May. During these months, the average daytime temperatures in lower-altitude regions, such as Namche Bazaar, range from 10°C to 15°C, while nighttime temperatures drop to around -5°C.

As you trek up to Gokyo and Renjo La, the temperature is colder during the day, with temperatures sometimes averaging 5°C to 8 °C, and very cold at night, reaching as low as-15 °C. The paths are lined with blossoming rhododendrons and dense vegetation, which makes the area even more colorful.

During the summer months of June to August, the monsoon season is characterized by stormier conditions, with warm winds accompanied by rainfall and increased cloud cover. Lower altitudes may experience daytime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C, and nighttime temperatures rarely drop below zero.

Nevertheless, the upper regions around Renjo La are cold, with daytime temperatures ranging between 5 ℃ and 10 ℃, while nighttime temperatures drop between -5 ℃ and -10 ℃. Trekkers should be ready to encounter slippery paths, leeches at the foot of the forest, and poor visibility in the mountains.

The best time to undertake the trek is in autumn, which spans from September to November. The skies are clear and crisp, offering some of the best views of the Himalayas. Low-altitude temperatures during the day range from 10°C to 16°C, while higher altitudes, such as Gokyo Valley and Renjo La, have daytime highs of 5°C to 10°C.

The temperatures in the high camps by night can drop to a very low level, ranging from -10°C to -15°C, so it is necessary to have a warm layer and a good sleeping bag.

Winter, from December to February, transforms the region into a snowy wonderland. This is the least crowded time of year, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking solitude. Lower elevations during the day may stay around 5°C to 8°C, but the upper regions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures near Renjo La hover between -5°C and 0°C, and nights can drop to an unforgiving -20°C or even lower. Snow often blankets the pass, making it impassable at times, so careful planning and advanced gear are necessary.

All in all, trekkers must be prepared to face drastic temperature changes regardless of the season. The clothing is very important and should be warm and layered, as mornings and evenings are cold at high altitudes, and the sun is surprisingly warm in the middle of the day, especially at lower elevations. Temperatures in the past, especially in late autumn and winter, can be significantly lower (due to wind chill) than the official measurements report.

What to Pack for the Renjo La Pass Trek

Packing smartly before the Renjo La Pass trek is also important, as it is necessary to carry suitable gear and clothing due to the high-altitude trails. You need to know what to take with you during the trip and what to leave behind. Under- or overpacking is a dreadful idea.

Regardless of whether you are going alone or with a group, layering plays a crucial role in adapting to the sudden temperature changes between hot days and frigid nights. Use moisture-wicking underlayers to keep you dry, an insulating fleece or down mid-layer, or a down coat, and then an outer shell that should be windproof and waterproof.

A warm down jacket with a rating of at least -15 degrees C is essential, whether in the morning or the evening, as it is usually cold. Waterproof and comfortable trekking boots are essential on rocky terrain, as it can become icy at times. The 4-season sleeping bag with a rating of -15 and below will keep you warm in teahouses that are located high above the ground, where heating systems are rare.

A high-quality headlamp, spare batteries, sunglasses that protect against UV light, and a sun hat are essential pieces of equipment. Lip balm (with SPF 50+) and sunscreen are crucial in protecting your skin against the strong Himalayan sun. Trekking poles will keep your knees out of trouble when doing a long descent, and water bottles that can be reused by adding purification tablets or a filtration unit will prevent adding to the amount of plastic waste.

When trekking alone, it is advisable to carry a solar charger and power banks to charge your devices, as well as a small first aid kit and altitude sickness medicine. Heavy-weight items may also be shared among group trekkers, such as water filters or first-aid kits.

Safety Tips for Renjo La Pass Trek

When trekking at high altitudes, such as Renjo La, your safety is of paramount importance. Acclimatization is the key issue here; adhere to the golden rule, which is to climb high, sleep low, and rest whenever necessary. It is also helpful to drink at least three liters of water per day and be aware of the signs of altitude sickness, which include headaches, nausea, or dizziness.

Ensure that you have insurance coverage that includes high-altitude treks and helicopter evacuation services. For risk-averse solo trekkers, a satellite phone or data-enabled local SIM card can be a lifesaver in times of emergency. As Outfitter Himalaya considers safety issues, one feels safe in solo and group trekking.

Important  Safety Tips for the Successful Renjo La Pass Trek

  • Select the Right Season: The Gokyo Renjo La trek is all about timing. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most recommended seasons, as they offer clear skies, good views, and pleasant temperatures. Avoid the monsoon months when the trails are very slippery, and also the winter months when the pass may be blocked with a lot of snow. By selecting the season, you will get safer trails and amazing, uninterrupted views.
  • Be Mentally and Physically Ready: The Gokyo Renjo La route is challenging, especially for inexperienced trekkers, due to its high passes and lengthy walking days. This can be achieved by developing stamina before your trip through regular hikes and cardio exercises. Equally important is the state of mind, having that confidence that you will have bad days and everything can improve your attitude on the trail so much.
  • Get yourself well acclimatized: The fact is that altitude sickness becomes a serious issue at altitudes of more than 3,500m. The best way to prevent it is to follow the acclimatization calls outlined in your itinerary and take it easy. Rest days: Use them to explore other villages or viewpoints, which will help your body adapt to the thinner air. No matter how good you feel, do not miss these breaks.
  • Bust in Your Trekking Boots: New boots can be a nightmare when it comes to causing blisters and making you miserable. Use the trekking boots on a short hike at home to break them in and assess their comfort. Happy feet on the trail with well-fitted, worn-in boots.
  • Pack smart and be light: When going without a porter, carry only what you need to stay within the weight limit, carrying unnecessary loads causes unnecessary pressure during difficult climbs. Pay attention to warm clothing, a quality sleeping bag, and reusable equipment to minimize the amount you need to take with you.
  • Hire a Guide or porter: To make your trek safe and ecstatic, hiring a local guide or a porter would be a good idea. Guides are familiar with the terrain as well as weather patterns, and porters are there to ease your load. Moreover, they can negotiate a lower rate of accommodation due to their familiarity with the area.
  • Clean Hydrated Eating: Do not eat meat or drink alcohol on the trail, as the freshness of food may be uncertain in remote teahouses. Stick to a local, vegetable-based diet as your primary energy source, and drink either purified or boiled water. Avoid drinking bottled water; instead, carry a bottle with purification tablets of your own.
  • Bring a Sufficient Amount of Cash: There are few ATMs in the Himalayas, the most reliable one is in the Namche Bazaar. More than that, cash is king. Bring the local currency to purchase additional snacks, a hot shower, or Wi-Fi, which is not available via digital payments in most villages.
