How challenging is Poon Hill Trek?

The Poon Hill trek is considered one of the easiest and most accessible Himalayan treks in Nepal, making it a top choice for first-time trekkers, families with children, or elderly solo travelers with moderate fitness levels.

Anyone can join Short Poon Hill Trek. You only have to be healthy and fit enough to walk. It needs only 4-6 hours of walking in well-maintained trails, stone staircases, and village routes. Talking about the trail, most of it gradually ascends through lush woodlands of rhododendrons, pine, and fir.

In comparison to high-altitude treks, such as Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, no extreme elevation is attained, and there are no risks of oxygen deprivation on Poon Hill. Altitude sickness is also not common, as we only gradually ascend to a relatively low altitude, considering the other Himalayan pursuits.

The 3,767 stone steps to Ulleri on Day 1 are the most physically challenging section of the trek. However, with the help of a local guide, adequate pacing, and frequent breaks, it can be easily done by anyone with a basic level of fitness. Along the way, you cross some thrilling bridges over rivers and streams. There can be some sections that are steep and rugged.

Poon Hill Trek Difficulty- Easy yet Rewarding For All Levels

The Poon Hill Trek is considered one of the most beginner-friendly, easiest, and historically accessible treks in Nepal, making it suitable for all travelers, regardless of age or fitness level. The Poon Hill trek is a perfect fit for those starting, as the trail is well-marked, the elevation change is gradual, and there is no technical climbing involved. Seniors still interested in making it to the Himalayas, children in that age where they can join the family, and first-timers - this trek is the one to make.

Despite the 4-6 hours of walking per day and a couple of steep areas you will have to hike (such as the infamous stone stairs leading to Ulleri), the level of challenging hiking is low to moderate in general. Altitude sickness in Poon Hill (3,210 meters) is very low at its peak.

As long as you’re healthy and allow yourself some time, you will do the trek comfortably, and even after it is over, you will get rewarded with some of the best views of Himalayan sunrise. This adventure excursion demonstrates that you do not have to be a mountain climber to feel the charm of the Himalayan Range.

Preparation for the Poon Hill Trek

While the Poon Hill trek is relatively easy, a little preparation can make your journey more comfortable and enjoyable. As you have to walk 4-6 hours on stone stairs, you can engage in brisk walks (5-8 km daily) and do light cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, or stair climbing. Stretching and flexibility exercises help prevent soreness.

Other preparations include smart packing, don’t forget to carry basic medication, and any other necessary items if you have any health issues. You need to have travel insurance. You also need to be mentally prepared, such as being ready for early wake-ups, staying flexible in response to changing mountain weather, and embracing cultural immersion.

How to Reach Pokhara to Start the Poon Hill Trek

The most comfortable and convenient way to Pokhara is by taking a domestic flight of less than an hour from Kathmandu, which offers stunning aerial views of the Himalayas. Alternatively, you can travel by tourist bus or private vehicles, depending on your budget and comfort preferences.

At Outfitter Himalaya, we have flexible transportation add-on options. Whether you prefer a one-way or round-trip flight, a comfortable tourist Bus, or a private car with driver, we can arrange everything for you. Let us know your preference at the time of booking.

Best Season for the Poon Hill Trek 3 Days

The Poon Hill trek is an adventure that can be undertaken throughout the year, although each season brings its unique energy and atmosphere. Are you dreaming of chasing spring blossoms, autumn skies, or winter quiet? There is no bad time to trek Poon Hill, only different experiences to enjoy. Let's examine the different seasons and their advantages and disadvantages.

Short Poon Hill Trek in Spring (March-May)- Most Colorful and popular season

The Poon Pill trek is best experienced during spring, when the scenery and comfort are at their peak.

Why it's great:

  • Mild Temperature and clear skies
  • The forest is bursting with colourful rhododendron flowers (Nepal's national flower), which add a splash of color to your journey.
  • Excellent mountain views every day

Fact: In April, the rhododendron forests near Ghorepani transform into a pink-red fairy tale, renowned worldwide.

However, spring is also the peak season for trekking in Nepal, so the trails can get crowded, and accommodations may be limited. It's essential to book your Trek in advance during this season.

Short Poon Hill Trek in Summer (June-August) / Monsoon – Green, lush, and Alive

Though summer brings monsoon rains, the trail remains open and surprisingly beautiful.

Why it's great:

  • Lush green forests and blooming wildflowers
  • Fewer tourists on the trail
  • Peaceful, refreshing wind-blown landscapes

However, Heavy rainfall can make the trails slippery and dangerous, and clouds and fog may obstruct the views.

Facts: The Annapurna region experiences lower rainfall compared to the eastern part of Nepal; therefore, Poon Hill can still be completed with the right equipment.

Short Poon Hill Trek in Autumn (September-November) – Perfect weather and Festivals

Autumn is the peak season for trekking in Nepal with excellent weather and cultural richness.

Why it's great:

  • Crisp, clean, stable weather with clear skies
  • Stunning views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre
  • Experience Nepal's Biggest festivals like Dashain and Tihar

Facts: Post-monsoon air is the clearest, making it the best time to take photographs and enjoy the mountain views.

Poon Hill Trek in Winter (December-February) – Quiet Trails and Crystal views

Poon Hill is underrated, but beautiful in winter.

Why it's great:

  • Trails are a less crowded, peaceful experience
  • Snow-covered mountains look magical at sunrise
  • Ghorepani is accessible even in light snow
  • Accommodation is readily available

However, the temperatures can drop below freezing in winter, so it's essential to pack warm clothing and gear. The higher altitudes may also experience heavy snowfall, making the Trek more challenging.

  • Wear comfortable shoes: Break in your hiking boots with short walking before the Trek. The trail is steep with irregular ways, and you need good footwear.
  • Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated during the Trek is crucial, especially at higher altitudes. It is advisable to drink plenty of water, even when you are not thirsty. Drink plenty of water and use bottled or safe water to avoid waterborne illnesses.
  • Pace yourself: There is no hurry. Walk at a slow pace, take breaks, and enjoy the scenery. It is not competition but an experience.
