Nepal Bhutan Tour Difficulty and Altitude Sickness

The 13-Day Nepal-Bhutan Tour is thoughtfully designed with comfort, safety, and accessibility in mind. The Nepal Bhutan tour is a moderately easy cultural journey and ideal for travelers of all ages who wish to experience the Himalayas without strenuous trekking.

Nepal-Bhutan Tour combines scenic drives, guided sightseeing, and light hikes, making it accessible even to those without trekking experience. You’ll spend most of your time between 1,300m and 2,500m, which means altitude sickness is extremely rare on this trip.

In Nepal, the tour involves no hiking, only scenic drives and guided sightseeing around major heritage cities such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan.

In Bhutan, you’ll enjoy a few gentle hikes, the most notable being the Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery trail, which takes about 3-4 hours uphill through pine forests decorated with colorful prayer flags. For those who prefer an easier ascent, pony rides are available up to the halfway point.

The highest point reached during the trip is Dochula Pass (3,100m) between Thimphu and Punakha, and the Tiger’s Nest (3,120m). Throughout the journey, you’ll be accompanied by experienced local guides who monitor your pace, comfort, and well-being. The Nepal Bhutan Highlights Trip focuses on cultural immersion and scenic exploration.

  • Trip cancellation or delay
  • Medical emergencies and evacuation
  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • Accidents or unexpected health issues during the tour

While the Nepal Bhutan journey is easy and safe, both countries are located in mountainous regions, where weather or flight delays can occasionally occur. Having reliable insurance ensures peace of mind and protection from unexpected expenses.

Outfitter Himalaya can assist you by providing guidelines on what your policy should include – so you can travel confidently and focus on experiencing the Himalayas, worry-free.

How to travel between Nepal and Bhutan?

This short international flight – approximately 1 hour 15 minutes – is one of the most beautiful in the world, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayan giants, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga on clear days.

Are there any limitations on visiting Bhutan?

There is no fixed limit on the number of tourists allowed to visit Bhutan each year. However, the country practices a "High Value, Low Impact" tourism policy that promotes quality, sustainable travel rather than mass tourism.

Independent travel (without a guide or licensed company) is not permitted in Bhutan. All international travelers (except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) must book their trip through a licensed tour operator and pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), currently USD 100 per person per night.

While there's no strict cap on visitor numbers, Bhutan's structured tourism system naturally limits the flow of tourists, preserving the country's pristine environment, living traditions, and peaceful atmosphere.

In short, anyone can visit Bhutan, but every trip must follow the official travel guidelines to ensure a more meaningful and responsible journey through the Kingdom of Happiness.
