The total distance of the Everest Base Camp trek
The total distance covered during the Everest Base Camp trek is 130 kilometres (81 miles). Usually, trekkers cover this distance while following the standard Everest Base Camp trekking route that starts and ends from/to Lukla. The trek typically takes 12-14 days, allowing for acclimatization and side trips.
*Note: This distance may vary slightly depending on your specific route, the side trips you embark on, and your starting point in the region.
In 12 to 14 days of trek, you will cover 11 to 15 km on average daily. So, you do not have to worry even though 130 km sounds enormous. Trekkers cover around 3-4 km per hour, so 15 km daily is okay. You do not have to cover 3-4 km every hour. You can have your pace and ascend gradually. The distance mentioned above is attainable by trekkers of all ages, whether experienced or beginners.
In addition, trekking with a company like us will allow you to walk freely, as our porters will carry heavy bags. You will only have a daypack of essentials yourself, which will help you focus on walking, and you can enjoy the trek freely.
Everest Base Camp trek duration
You will trek for 5 to 7 hours each day during the Everest Base Camp trek. If you follow the standard route to the base camp of Mount Everest, you will spend at least 11 days on the mountain, with at least two acclimatization days. From Lukla, it takes eight days to reach Everest Base Camp. You will spend two acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Likewise, in three days of walking, you will return to Lukla. Trekking from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp via Gorak Shep is one of the longest days.
Namche Bazaar
Everest Base Camp trek elevation
The standard Everest Base Camp trek starts with a short flight from Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) to Lukla (2,860 m/9,383 ft).
From Kathmandu to Lukla, there is a massive change in elevation in just 35 minutes, so you will descend to Phakding (2,610 m/8,563 ft) the same day to spend the night. Phakding is only 200 meters below Lukla, which will help with acclimatization. Likewise, from Lukla to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft), you will ascend 2,504 meters (8,215 ft). The two acclimatization days between the treks will help you get used to the altitude and avoid altitude sickness.
On the acclimatization days, you will hike to a high point and return to the same village to spend the night. This process helps acclimatize the body. From Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft), you will hike to the Hotel Everest View (3,962 m/13,000 ft). Similarly, from Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft), you will hike to Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m/16,732 ft). Each day, you will gain up to 500 meters (1,640 ft).
The Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft) is the highest point during the Everest Base Camp trek.
You will not spend a night here or spend a long time there as you will be above 5,500 meters (18,044 ft). Instead, ascend to Kala Patthar to enjoy a lovely sunrise, descend to Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft), and begin the return trek to Lukla. Overall, from Lukla- the starting point of the Everest Base Camp trek to the highest point of the journey- Kala Patthar, you will gain 2,685 meters (8,809 ft).

Everest Base Camp helicopter tour
EBC Heli Tour
You will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to Everest Base Camp during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. It is a four-hour program and the easiest way to witness the beauty of the Himalayas. The helicopter lands at Everest View Hotel. As you will spend little time at high altitude, there is no risk of altitude sickness during this adventure.
Which is the easiest way to hike the Everest Base Camp trek?
If we had to select one Everest Base Camp trek package, it would be our 16-day EBC trek. This package has ample acclimatization days and plenty of time to enjoy nature. Likewise, the EBC trek helicopter return is our second-best package, as you can skip the return trekking from Kala Patthar to Lukla, saving three days. If your budget is not an issue, you can do the Everest Base Camp trek comfortably while keeping the adventure part of the journey.
We have designed unique 5 to 7-day Everest Base Camp trek packages with helicopter flights in the itinerary for some travelers who wish to do this trek but do not want to trek long.
