The Manaslu Trek offers a splendid journey through lush, green lowlands up to alpine pastures and the Himalayan landscape surrounded by peaks. The main mountain attraction of this journey is Manaslu (8156 m, 26,758 ft), the world’s 8th peak, highlighted by the traditional villages that are surrounded by fertile farmland and glorious scenery. The area is full of wonder and surprises on the unspoiled trails of Nepal.

Manaslu Trekking offers extensive natural diversity from terraced fields to alpine lakes, glaciers, and mountain views. Manaslu has all the highlights but none of the crowds of the nearby Annapurna Region. The high point of our journey will be the Larkya La (5160 m/16,925 ft). On the way to this mountain pass, we visit many villages rich in ethnicities with people following a rural lifestyle. After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kathmandu, we leave Kathmandu Valley and drive through scenic rural farms and villages. Look for mountain views along the way to the riverside town of Arughat Bazaar and further up to Machhakhola.

We continue through the lush landscape passing the small village of Khorla Bensi and the hot springs at Tatopani. The valley narrows and passes a forested section, crossing the river and streams with some challenging sections of trail, and eventually, we ascend to Jagat, beautifully surrounded by fields.

Today, we continue up the river valley and reach the Gurung village of Philim. The Buddhist culture with many monuments of chorten and prayer flags, monasteries, and more to explore.

The trek continues up the Buddi Gandaki through forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. We pass passes several side valleys to reach the majestic village of Deng, where potatoes, barley, buckwheat, and more are grown.

We continue first on a pleasant, level stretch and then a steady climb through thick forests and sights of Manaslu ahead as we reach the Buddhist village of Namrung in a beautiful natural setting.

Today, we will enjoy unforgettable viewpoints of Manaslu, Gorkha, Dwijen, Saula, Lajing, and many other snow-capped peaks. Today’s trail offers many spectacular views of the Himalayas as well as the scenic landscape through which we are trekking. The trail passes chorten, mani stones, and prayer flags before we reach Lhogaon with a monastery above and a Buddhist-run school, too.

The surrounding glory of the natural beauty of the Himalayas is overwhelming as we continue to picturesque Sama Gaon, surrounded by fields in an unforgettable location.

Today is a rest day. If you have the energy and interest, we have an optional hike to Manaslu Base Camp and a cave said to have been used by the 11th-century mystic, Milarepa, and Birendra Lake shimmering below the peaks.

It is a pleasant journey uphill through the stark, sometimes windy valley to Samdo. We have more great views and at Samdo. The village lies close to the Tibetan border linked by a high pass to the northwest (restricted to tourists). Samdo has nearby village of Tibetan refugees.

We follow a rocky, rugged trail to Larkya La Phedi beneath the pass. Nearby is Larkya Bazaar, the site of seasonal fairs and where vendors have set up a market with goods from Tibet.

Today will be a long day with a challenging climb up to the Larky La pass. We will have a packed lunch with us and will take a break along the way. From the pass, we enjoy views of Larkya Peak, Manaslu, Ratna Chuli, Cheo Peak, and much more! The trail passes down steeply by icy ponds to a broad valley with many walls and continued sensational views along the way. We descend on a rugged trail to Bimthang in a spectacular setting.

Trekking through high pastures we have more sensational mountain views on our way through rhododendron forests to the cultivated fields at the village of Kharche. We continue down to the splendid Tilche just before reaching the bustling village of Dharapani.

Manaslu Trekking permits

Manaslu Trekking is a restricted trekking area in Nepal, and trekkers need to obtain special permits to trek in the region. Here are the types of permits required for the Manaslu Trekking:

Restricted Area Permit

All trekkers must obtain a Restricted Area Permit to trek in the Manaslu Region. This permit can only be obtained through a registered trekking agency in Nepal such as Outfitter Himalaya. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)

This permit is also required to trek in the Manaslu Conservation Area. It can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu individually or through a trekking company.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The Manaslu Trekking route passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, and therefore, trekkers need to obtain the ACAP permit as well. The permit can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board individually or through a trekking company.
