Must-Know
Essential Information

Some practical tips from our expert local Kathmandu tour guide, Sobita Khanal, who has been working with Outfitter Himalaya since it was established.

  • Wear comfortable clothing and footwear: Kathmandu can be hot and humid (depending on when you travel), so choose lightweight, breathable options. Comfortable footwear is also essential, as you will walk a lot during the tour.
  • Carry a water bottle: Staying hydrated during the day tour is essential, so bring a refillable one.
  • Be prepared for the weather: The weather in Kathmandu can be unpredictable, so check the forecast before you go and carry appropriate gear, such as a raincoat or umbrella ( if you are traveling during the monsoon).
  • Carry local currency: You must carry Nepalese currency to buy souvenirs, food, and entrance tickets. ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu, but carrying Nepali cash is always helpful.
  • Be respectful of local customs: Nepal is a conservative country, so it is essential to dress modestly and respect local customs and beliefs. Remove your shoes before entering temples and look out for prohibitions on photography. Refrain from wearing shoes inside the temples and monasteries. Ask first to take photos. Many places prohibit taking photos.
  • Try the local food: Nepal has a rich culinary culture, and sampling it is a must-do on the day tour.
  • Be aware of scams: As with any popular tourist destination, Kathmandu is prone to scams and pickpocketing incidents. Be aware of your surroundings and be cautious when dealing with strangers.
  • Be aware of traffic: Traffic in Kathmandu can be chaotic, so be careful when crossing the streets and follow your guide's instructions.

FAQs

Yes, especially if this is your first visit to Nepal or you have only one free day in Kathmandu. This guided 6–7-hour tour combines four of the valley's most important cultural sites: Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath.

Rather than trying to visit every attraction in the Kathmandu Valley, the itinerary focuses on four major sites, giving you enough time to explore each with your guide.

  • Yes, a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu can be a good option during a long layover. A private Kathmandu day tour can be customized around your flight schedule, allowing you to visit selected UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, or Pashupatinath.
  • We recommend choosing fewer sites rather than trying to cover the entire itinerary if you have limited time in your layover.
  • Yes, it is possible to arrange Kathmandu sightseeing before your international departure if you have free time before your flight. Outfitter Himalaya can adjust the itinerary according to your departure time.
  • We recommend finishing sightseeing well before your airport check-in time because traffic in Kathmandu can be unpredictable. If you have luggage, please inform us in advance so we can advise you on the most convenient arrangement.

Yes, the Kathmandu Day Tour is particularly suitable for first-time visitors who want to understand Nepal's history, religion, architecture, and local culture in a limited amount of time. Instead of visiting attractions at random, the tour brings together several of Kathmandu's most significant cultural and religious landmarks, with explanations from a local guide. It provides a useful introduction to Kathmandu before travelers continue to other destinations in Nepal, such as Pokhara, Chitwan, or Everest Base Camp Trek.

  • The Kathmandu Day Tour is an easy sightseeing experience, but you should expect some walking at the heritage sites. You may need to walk through temple courtyards, historic squares, stupa complexes, and uneven or paved sections around the monuments. Swayambhunath is located on a hill and involves stairs to reach the main stupa.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are therefore recommended. The private vehicle takes you between the major attractions, so you do not need to walk between the sightseeing sites.
  • Yes, we offer a customized itinerary and plan a tour according to your interests, time, and travel schedule. If you have already visited one attraction, you can ask to replace it with another cultural or historical site in Kathmandu.
  • Travelers with special interests in Buddhist heritage, Hindu temples, Newari culture, architecture, photography, or local markets can also discuss their preferences with the Outfitter Himalaya team before the tour.
  • Customization is particularly useful for travelers with limited time or who want a more personalized Kathmandu sightseeing experience.
