Everest Base Camp Trek Distance

The Everest Base Camp trek is an iconic and lifetime adventure. For some, it is just another adventure, and for most, completing this trek is a huge achievement.

Whatever category you fall into, you have to understand why the Everest Base Camp trek takes more than 10 days to complete, the distance covered during the trek, the daily trekking hours, and the elevation change it brings as a result.

Understanding these things will help you set the right expectations for the journey and make the overall trekking experience smooth. You can do the Everest Base Camp trek in many ways, but one standard and most famous EBC trek itinerary is the 14-day package.

In this blog, we will break down the general Everest Base Camp trek distance (if you follow the mainstream trail) along with other trekking routes to the base camp of Everest.

Do note that the time of the year you choose to do the Everest Base Camp trek will affect the Everest Base Camp trek distance and difficulty. Check out our Everest Base Camp trek best time blog for information.

Table of Contents

The total distance of the Everest Base Camp trek

The total distance covered during the Everest Base Camp trek is 130 kilometers (81 miles). Usually, trekkers cover this distance while following the standard Everest Base Camp trekking route that starts and ends from/to Lukla. The trek typically takes around 12-14 days to complete, allowing for acclimatization and side trips.

Note: This distance may vary slightly depending on the specific route you take, the side trips you embark on, and your starting point in the region.

In the span of 12 to 14 days of trekking, you will cover 11 km to 15 km on average each day. So, you do not have to worry even though 130 km sounds huge. Trekkers cover around 3-4 km per hour, so 15 km each day is not that bad.

You do not have to cover 3-4 km every hour. You can have your pace and ascend gradually. What we want to say is the distance mentioned above is attainable by all ages of trekkers, whether you are experienced or beginner.

On top of that, trekking with a company like us will allow you to walk freely as our porters will carry the heavy bags. You will only have a daypack on yourself with essentials. This will help you focus on walking, and you can enjoy the trek freely.

Everest Base Camp trekking duration

During the Everest Base Camp trek, you will trek for 5 to 7 hours on average each day. You will spend at least 11 days on the mountain if you follow the standard route to the base camp of Mount Everest, with at least two acclimatization days.

From Lukla, it takes 8 days to reach Everest Base Camp. You will spend two acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Likewise, in three days of walking, you will return to Lukla. Trekking from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp via Gorak Shep is one of the longest days.

Everest Base Camp trek elevation

The standard Everest Base Camp trek starts with a short flight from Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) to Lukla (2,860 m/9,383 ft). Lukla is the starting point of the trek. From Kathmandu to Lukla, there is a huge change in elevation in just 35 minutes, so you will descend to Phakding (2,610 m/8,563 ft) the same day to spend the night.

Phakding is located only around 200 meters below Lukla. This will help in acclimatization. Likewise, from Lukla to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft), you will ascend 2,504 meters (8,215 ft). The two acclimatization days in between the trek will help you get used to the altitude and avoid altitude sickness.

On the acclimatization days, you will hike to a high point and return to the same village to spend the night. This process helps acclimatize the body. From Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,286 ft), you will hike to the Hotel Everest View (3,962 m/13,000 ft). Similarly, from Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft), you will hike to Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m/16,732 ft). Each day, you will gain up to 500 meters (1,640 ft).

The Everest Chola Pass Trail

The Everest Chola Pass Trail

Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft) is the highest point during the Everest Base Camp trek. You will not spend a night here or spend a long time there as you will be above 5,500 meters (18,044 ft). Rather, ascend to Kala Patthar to enjoy a lovely sunrise and then descend to Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft) and begin the return trek to Lukla.

Overall, from Lukla- the starting point of the Everest Base Camp trek to the highest point of the journey- Kala Patthar, you will gain 2,685 meters (8,809 ft).

Everest Base Camp helicopter tour

During the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, you will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to Kala Patthar. It is a four-hour program and the easiest way to witness the beauty of the Himalayas. The helicopter lands at Kala Patthar and Everest View Hotel. As you will spend little time at high altitude, there is no risk of altitude sickness during this adventure.

Which is the best and easiest way to hike the Everest Base Camp trek?

If we have to select one Everest Base Camp trek package, then it would be our 14-days EBC trek. This package has ample acclimatization days and offers you plenty of time to enjoy nature. Likewise, the EBC trek helicopter return is our second-best package, as you can skip the return trekking from Kala Patthar to Lukla, saving 3 days.

We have designed special 5 to 7-day Everest Base Camp trek packages with helicopter flights in the itinerary for some travelers who wish to do this trek but do not want to spend a long time trekking.
