Manaslu Trekking is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. It is an incredible venture that crosses the Larkya La Pass and explores the rugged terrain and remoteness of the Manaslu region. The journey demands immense effort, courage to push you, strong local support, and well-equipped trekking essentials. You have to plan the trek carefully for a satisfying and hassle-free experience.
Before the trek starts, there is a lot to do, from picking the correct Manaslu trek itinerary and perfect month to departure to training yourself physically for the journey and arranging all the trekking gear and clothes. We have already written a blog on the Manaslu guide that briefs every little detail one should know about this trek, including difficulty, best time, accommodation, meals, costs, etc.
In this blog, we will discuss packing for this trek. What is required and why? Where can you buy the best trekking gear and what should you know while packing? We have also discussed renting gear and why you should consider it. Please read this blog carefully if you are packing for the Manaslu Hiking. Things that you should know before starting packing for the Manaslu Trekking
The Manaslu Trekking route is untouched, remote, and not commercialized like Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp. Trekkers have to carry every tiny thing on this trek. The trail is spread across varying climatic zones. You will experience different ecosystems and temperatures. Your clothes must fit the changing environment and cope with the alpine climate.
During the Manaslu Journey, you cannot wear the usual hiking clothes and shoes. Sturdy trekking boots and different layers of trekking clothes are required. Similarly, the trail is offbeat and steep, so walking with trekking poles is necessary. Even though tea houses provide blankets, you will need to carry a high-quality sleeping bag for the night.
By joining the Manaslu Walking Holidays, you agree to travel far away from modern towns and cities. The trek will be an unfiltered voyage through the Himalayas. You will be saying goodbye to modern conveniences and are ready to get uncomfortable and test your limits. By being well-packed, you can conquer the Manaslu Odyssey and experience the test of completing this ultimate, daring trek in the Himalayas.
What are the things you need for the Manaslu trek in Nepal?
We will share a separate packing checklist later in the blog. Here, we have discussed the different gear you will need during the trek and why you need it.
Sleeping gear during Manaslu Trekking
You must be on top of your sleep schedule during trekking to recover and feel better about walking daily. 7 to 8 hours of sleep followed by ample rest after 5 to 6 hours of walking each day is crucial. The most important thing to consider is the change in climate as the altitude increases. You will experience varying temperatures, and the climate will get colder as the elevation increases.
The unfortunate thing about tea houses is that the rooms are not insulated or have heating systems. So, trekkers have to rely heavily on a sleeping bag because the blanket provided by the tea house is not enough to keep them warm throughout the night. Likewise, the sleeping bag makes the bedding much more comfortable. We highly recommend carrying a sleeping liner for more warmth and comfort. Trekkers who are sensitive to pillowcases should also have their own.
Tea houses provide fresh bedding, but they are not spotless. You can buy your sleeping bag, which is fine for all seasons. If you decide to do the Manaslu Circuit trek in winter, you will need a sleeping bag to keep you warm up to -18C.
If you are on a tight budget, do not worry. We can help you rent a perfect sleeping bag in Thamel, Kathmandu. Renting a bag costs USD 2 to USD 3 per day.

Puffy down jacket
A down jacket is your outer layer. It retains heat and traps warm air. The down jacket should be lightweight and compressible. It is a must on your Manaslu Trek packing list.
Once you reach higher elevations, a down jacket helps you withstand challenging temperatures and climatic conditions. However, investing in a nice down jacket can also cost money. We recommend Mountain Hard Wear and Mont Bell as two international brands for down jackets. We also highly recommend checking out Nepali brands.
We have some of the finest Nepali brands selling high-quality down jackets at a very reasonable price. If you do not want to spend much money, consider renting a down jacket in Kathmandu. You can rent the jacket for the entire trek for less than USD 25.
Duffel bag and daypack for Manaslu Hike
You will pack your trekking clothes and essentials in a duffel bag and daypack. Now, what pack in which bag is essential?
Porters carry the duffel bags, so we recommend that trekkers pack their trekking clothes, toiletries, and other unnecessary items. Note that porters usually walk ahead of the group and reach the tea houses first.
You may not have access to your stuff while walking. Therefore, pack everything you need while walking in a daypack.
It should include your documents, cash, snacks, SPF, lip balm, map, camera, water bottle, toilet paper, etc. We provide duffel bags to our trekkers free of cost for use during the trek. You can also buy a 35 to 45-liter daypack.
You do not have to spend a fortune on your daypack unless you want to. There are many excellent brands in Nepal from where you can purchase your daypack at a reasonable cost. They are lightweight but sturdy and come with straps, zips, and hooks.
Essential clothing for the Manaslu Adventure Walking
The right trekking clothes are essential to make the trek comfortable. Likewise, you must wear the right clothes for complete flexibility and comfort during trekking.
Understanding different layers will make your journey incredible and allow you to conquer varying temperatures. We have divided clothing into three parts- upper body, torso, and lower body.
We have shared all the things that you need in these categories below:
Upper body
Sun hat/cap: During the trek, you will be exposed to intense sun rays. A sun hat or cap is essential to keep the sun's rays away from your eyes and face. It will also reduce the risk of heat stroke and provide a clear view.
Beanie: You will need a beanie to tackle cold at night and in the morning. A warm, knitted beanie is recommended. Your body regulates heat and keeps you warm when your head and ears are covered.
Scarf or neck gaiter: Covering your neck will add a layer of warmth to the mountains. It will also protect you from catching a cold and prevent sunburn. You can carry a scarf or neck gaiter of your choice. UV ray sunglasses are an important item to have during trekking in the Himalayas. As the elevation increases, exposure to the sun also increases. UV ray-protection sunglasses will provide you with great visibility and protect your eyes.
Face masks: Carry a nice mask to cover your nose and mouth in case a strong wind blows. You can also cover your nose and mouth with a scarf or neck gaiter. It will protect you from a cough and cold.
Torso
Base layer: This is the closest layer to your skin. It is important to invest in a high-quality, moisture-wicking base layer. Make sure your underwear is not tight-fitting.
Insulation layer: Thermals are your insulation layer. Get tops and bottoms in synthetic or wool merino. These fabrics are breathable and odor-resistant. The insulation layer will regulate your body's temperature and keep you warm.
Waterproof/windproof layer: We also call it a shell. It is the outer layer of your clothing. This layer will protect you from wind, rain, and snow. You have to purchase windproof/waterproof jackets and pants.
Fleece jacket: Fleece jackets or pullovers help you resist additional cold. They lock in warmth and keep your body insulated.
Lower body
Trekking pants: You will need special trekking pants made of technical fabric. These pants are designed mindfully to protect you from harsh alpine environments and provide comfort. Your trekking pants must be stretchable, breathable, and quick-drying.
Casual pants: These are the regular pants you can wear in a tea house or city. Pack a couple of regular pairs of casual pants for the trek. Ladies can consider leggings or comfortable night pants.
Waterproof and windproof shell pants: The outer layer protects your legs from wind, cold, sun, and rain. The waterproof/windproof pants are also scratch-free, so you will be protected from insect bites or scratches from passing by plants.
Hiking shorts: You can pack a couple of pairs of hiking shorts if you do not find wearing full pants for a long time. Make sure to consider weather and trail conditions before trekking in hiking shorts.
What kind of undergarments should you wear during Manaslu trekking?
Your undergarments have to be comfortable. We recommend avoiding wearing tight undergarments during trekking, as they will make you uneasy when you walk for 6 hours in them.
Pack undergarments that best suit you. Wear enough undergarments throughout the trek and wash them upon returning to Kathmandu. Pack 2-3 additional pairs, just in case.
Quick-drying material is recommended. A sports bra is the best for women who will spend long hours walking on rugged terrain. It will provide ample support and comfort. Likewise, pack a ziplock or bag of your choice to store used undergarments.
Footwear
Liner socks: Liner socks are optional. You can wear them under your hiking socks to add insulation. They are usually made of silk, which reduces friction and prevents blisters.
Trekking socks: You need good socks to walk long hours on a trail. Good hiking socks provide a soft base and extra support and prevent blisters.
Woolen socks: Woolen socks are necessary to protect your feet and feel comfortable in cold temperatures. Therefore, we recommend investing in good-quality woolen socks that are moisture-wicking and provide insulation.
Trekking boots: For the Manaslu trek, you will need sturdy, comfortable, and durable boots. You must be able to walk in your trekking boots for at least 6 hours a day, and your boots must be able to provide a proper grip on steep slopes. You can purchase new trekking boots for the trek, but do not bring a new pair of boots on the trek. Buy them early and break them in. Get used to the shoes to prevent foot pain and blisters while trekking.
Ice cleats (microspikes): If you are doing the Manaslu Circuit trek in the winter season or if the trail is icy and wet, you will need ice cleats or microspikes to prevent slipping.
Casual shoes: Wearing trekking boots all the time is not comfortable. Therefore, we recommend trekkers buy hiking shoes or Crocs to wear while in the teahouse or walking around the village. It will provide a break from your trekking boots.
Gaiter: A gaiter is a protective layer covering your trekking boots and lower legs. It closes the gap between your pants and boots, protecting you from dust, water, and debris.
Hands
Liner gloves: Liner gloves protect you from frostbite in extreme temperatures. They also provide insulation to your hands and ensure your comfort and warmth while outdoors.
Hard-shell outer gloves: Hard-shell gloves are used to layer above-liner gloves. They protect you from wind and water and provide an extra insulation layer.
If you must eat any medicine daily, pack ample of it throughout your trip to Nepal. Likewise, also make a personal first aid kit and include all necessary things like band-aids, ointment, painkillers, cold and cough medicines, altitude sickness medicine, indigestion medicine, etc.
We highly recommend meeting your doctor and getting the general medicines prescribed for the journey. Likewise, you will need to pack all toiletries for the trek, which include toilet paper, soap, toothbrush/paste, shampoo, wet wipes, moisturizer, SPF, lip balm, deodorant, etc.
Showers are impossible daily, and once the elevation increases above 3,000 meters, you may not be able to shower because of cold water and climate. So, wipe yourself with wet wipes daily and use lotions and deodorants to protect and hydrate your skin.
Likewise, SPF is essential, or you will get bad sunburn. Keep your SPF in your daypack and reapply it throughout the day. Change your socks and undergarments daily and store them in a separate back. The better you feel, the better you will enjoy the journey.
Nutrition and snacks
During the Manaslu trek, you will have excellent access to delicious meals. Your package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it may not be enough.
So, we highly recommend trekkers pack their favorite snacks along with high-energy protein bars and electrolytes for an instant energy boost. Keep your snacks and nuts in the daypack to munch while walking.
Reusable water bottle
A reusable water bottle (at least 1.5 to 2 liters) is important. Make sure your bottle can keep water warm for at least 12 hours. Likewise, you can purchase a small flask to carry tea or soup for the trail. Plastic water bottles are expensive and are not recommended.
Documents and cash
In your daypack, pack your passport, travel visa, permits, travel insurance copies, passport-sized photos, airline tickets, emergency contact details, emergency fund, and daily allowance. You will need extra money to buy services like hot showers, WiFi, and charging in the tea houses. Carry Nepali currency in small notes.
Miscellaneous
Other trekking essentials include small torches, hand sanitizer, trekking poles, cameras, power banks, solar chargers, adapters, spare batteries, etc. You can also pack navigation tools, binoculars (in case you get to spot a snow leopard), whistle, etc.
Manaslu Larke Pass
Renting or buying gear in Thamel for Manaslu Adventure
Thamel is the hub of tourists in Kathmandu. Most tourists visiting Nepal for treks, tours, and climbing expeditions stay in this area, with many hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops.
Here, you can find everything you need for the Manaslu trek, from clothing to a daypack, boots, trekking poles, a first aid kit, medicine, a satellite phone, a map, toiletries, etc.
Many shops sell original and high-quality trekking clothes. Along with that, you will also find much affordable, good-quality trekking gear. If you are planning to buy brand-name trekking clothes and gear, buy them in your country and bring them to Nepal, as they will cost more in Nepal.
However, if only quality matters to you, not the brand's name, then there are many options in Nepal. Likewise, we have a handful of Nepali trekking clothes and gear brands that sell excellent-quality trekking essentials at a reasonable price.
Trekkers on a budget can also rent down jackets, sleeping bags, trekking poles, etc, at very low costs. Explore Thamel and visit a few shops before purchasing. Our guide will recommend the best shops and help you negotiate the best price.
Laundry during the Manaslu Hiking
Laundry during the Manaslu Circuit trek is a challenge. Trekkers should not rely on washing and reusing their clothes while trekking. Because of the cold water and climate, it takes multiple days to air-dry clothes.
There is no washing machine or dryer, so hand-washing clothes is essential. Pack ample clothes and undergarments throughout the trek and wash them upon returning to Kathmandu.
Manaslu trekking packing tips
While packing for the Manaslu trek, you must consider the weather, available services, and terrain. If this is your first time packing for a trek in the Himalayas, the process may be overwhelming as you have to pack many small things.
Reading blogs like this will help you understand what to expect during the Manaslu Circuit trek and why you need certain things. We recommend you put the information on paper or your mobile if it is essential and will help you. Likewise, we recommend you print your packing checklist and use it when arranging trekking gear and clothes. We have shared a few more packing tips below that will significantly help you during packing.
Pack your clothes in a systematic order. Place clothes you will not need below and keep things you may need easily accessible. Use packing cubes to organize your clothes into categories. It will save you time and help you find everything easily.
While walking, it's okay. You will have views to enjoy and a destination to reach. However, there is nothing much to do in the tea house. Travelers' games will keep you entrained and connect you with fellow trekkers.
Download movies, podcasts, and music for the journey. Bring your journal, pen, and book.
Pack ample Ziploc bags to store used clothes, toilet paper, and trash during trekking. Likewise, you can use them to store half-eastern bars or snacks to prevent them from going stale.
Carry a pot of tiger balm or some balm to keep yourself calm. It also protects from insect bites. If you quickly get anxious, carry your choice of essential oil rollers.
You can roll your sleeping bag liner inside the sleeping bag to save space.
Keep flu, cold, and cough medicines in your day pack. Likewise, buy muscle pain reliever sprays, like Move, to use at night if your legs hurt from long hours of walking.
Get a sleeping mask and noise reducer to use in the tea house. Trekkers, guides, and porters keep coming out of the tea houses, especially during the peak trekking season, making the environment slightly noisy.
Pack your pillowcase if you are highly sensitive.
Make a small repair kit for the trek, including spare shoelaces, a torch, tape, a nail cutter, and a small knife.
Carry mouth fresheners, mints, etc, as you will have lots of garlic and ginger soups.
