Everest Base Camp trek weather in June

June is the first month of summer and also the start of the monsoon season in Nepal. You will enjoy bright, sunny days in the first two weeks of the month. The warm, comfortable rays of the sun will make trekking fantastic. As the days pass, the rays intensify, and the climate gets hot. By the end of June, frequent rainfall may start. However, it is not 100% sure. In some years, we see regular rain in June. Nights and mornings will be comparatively colder than the daytime.

You have to balance between thin and warm clothes. Wear clothes in layers and remove/re-wear them as needed. Above Namche Bazaar, there is even less risk of rainfall. Be extra cautious during trekking in case you experience rain, fall, or muddy trails. Walk safely and slowly. Note that rainfall will significantly drop the temperature, so pack warm clothes.

Everest Base Camp Journey challenges in June

June has adverse weather and climate, so Everest Base Camp trek challenges increase. With the usual terrain, high altitude, and limited services, you also have to deal with unstable weather, and risks of altitude sickness.

Unstable weather and climate

June is the start of summer season in Nepal. While the Terai region (the plains of Nepal) sees a huge spike in heat, going above 40C, the Himalayan region has a mixed climate because of geography.

The foothills' temperatures are high, and as the elevation increases, the climate gets cold. At night, the temperature drops below 0C, even in June. On some days, scattered clouds may hinder the mountain views. Likewise, the chances of rainfall (lower elevations) or snowfall (higher elevations) are unpredictable.

Therefore, you have to be packed for all kinds of weather and emphasize rain gear.

Rainfall

The monsoon season does not fully arrive in June, but occasional rainfall and gloomy days can occur. While rainfall is not the biggest concern during the Everest Base Camp trek in June, it can't be ignored.

You must be physically and specifically mentally ready to walk on muddy trails and embrace wet landscapes. If you love nature during rainfall and its soothing aroma, the journey will be incredible.

Increased risk of altitude sickness on EBC trek in June?

Altitude sickness is the biggest challenge during the EBC trek throughout the year. But do the added environmental challenges/adversities increase the risk of altitude sickness?

The answer is yes. Environmental challenges increase pressure on your body, which increases the risk of altitude sickness. How to deal with it? Design your itinerary to provide ample time to trek, rest, and repeat.

Have 1-2 contingency days in case you face any delays. Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms and preventive measures. Most importantly, listen to your body, do not rush, and stay hydrated.

Delays in Lukla's flight

As we discussed earlier, the weather in June is unpredictable. Therefore, flights across the country experience frequent delays and a few cancellations. Lukla Airport, located at 2,860 meters, is the gateway to Everest Base Camp.

Trekkers have to take this flight to start trekking. You can also do the EBC trek without a Lukla flight, but the itinerary will be few days long. So, the Lukla flight remains the quickest and most affordable approach.

We cannot say whether your Lukla flight will be delayed, but there are chances, and you have to accept them. That is why we recommend at least 1-2 contingency days.

Possibility of obstructed scenery

The Everest Base Camp trek is famous for its scenery, specifically the mountain panoramas. If we look at the weather in June in the Everest region, we do not see a high chance of unclear views.

Most days are bright and sunny. Therefore, you will savor the stunning mountain vistas to the fullest. However, there can be days when the sky is cloudy and the mountains are hidden.

For the best trekking experience, please understand the weather limitations in June.

Preparation needed for the Everest Base Camp Voyage in June

The Everest Base Camp trek generally requires physical, mental, and gear preparations, even during the peak trekking seasons. While trekking in June, trekkers should consider a few additional things. We have talked about them below:

Physical preparation

Physical preparation is important regardless of the month you trek to Everest Base Camp. Trekking in the offseason requires a bit more effort because of added challenges.

You must be able to walk for 6-7 hours a day on rugged terrain that continuously ascends or descends. Good strength, stamina, and endurance are also essential.

Please do not underestimate this trek. It is different from hiking in other mountain ranges. Even if you are an active hiker, the Everest Base Camp Odyssey can be demanding. So, ensure you are physically ready to handle the required efforts.

Exercise and go on long walks. Strength training, endurance training, and aerobic exercises are recommended.

Mental preparation

While you train your body for the trek, you will also expand your mental capabilities. Factors like high altitude, daily long trekking hours, terrain, and limited modern conveniences make the journey quite mentally challenging.

You will be going out of your comfort zone and pushing your limits. Your mindset and attitude towards adventure trekking also matter a lot. If you are not ready to embrace nature and its simplicity, any standard Everest Base Camp trek package is not for you.

You should go for a luxury EBC trek, eliminating the lack of facilities and making the trip more achievable. Still, you must push yourself mentally daily to walk 6 -7hours and remain digitally offline.

How do you prepare mentally for the Everest Base Camp trek for June?

Educate yourself about the trek. What should you expect during trekking, and how will your day-to-day life be? What are the limitations, and how can you cope with them?

Have a positive mindset and stay determined to complete the trek. Most importantly, stay open to changes in the itinerary.

Gear preparation

You cannot wear regular clothes and shoes while trekking to Everest Base Camp. The diverse climate, harsh Himalayan environment, and high altitude demand proper alpine clothes to make the journey safe and smooth.

Light, breathable, and high-quality clothes improve the quality of the trek. Likewise, you will also need trekking gear, such as a sleeping bag, trekking poles, trekking boots, UV ray-blocking sunglasses, a daypack, etc.

You must also carry essentials like toilet paper, soap, lip balm, SPF, moisturizer, wet tissues, a first aid kit, snacks, etc. You may have many things available and have to invest good money if you are trekking for the first time.

Please thoroughly check the Everest Base Camp trek packing list and budget accordingly. If you are not planning to trek frequently, you can rent gear at a very affordable price in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Altitude training

You live close to the sea, and treks like Everest Base Camp exceed 5,500 meters above sea level. There is a drastic change in altitude, and you will experience this change in less than 9 to 10 days of the trip.

Even though the Everest Base Camp itinerary has acclimatization days, and you will gain at most 500 meters a day, we never know how your body will react to the change in altitude.

Everybody is different and can suffer from altitude sickness regardless of age and fitness. So, previous high-altitude experience is recommended. If this is your first time trekking, consider doing day hikes.

It will provide you with similar uphill walking conditions, and you will experience a rise in elevation. There are also specialized training centres where you can sign up and train for high-altitude treks. See what is available to you and choose your option.

Tips for the Everest Base Camp hike in June

Here, we have created a list of things you should do and avoid while trekking to Everest Base Camp. We have learned these few things over many years of organizing the trek for foreigners. These little things will improve the quality of your trek and raise your safety.

Pre-trek considerations

  • Book your trek early, especially if it is your first trek in Nepal. There is a lot to prepare for, and you need ample time to finish everything without rushing. We recommend having 4 to 6 weeks on hand for preparation but, if possible, have at least 2 to 3 months. Our excellent booking policy allows you to confirm your trip by paying minimal advance payment.
  • Do not feel awkward talking to our travel consultants and asking your questions. You can contact us as many times as you want with your queries. It is better to be aware and enjoy the trip than oblivious.
  • Make wise decisions while arranging trekking clothes and gear. Make a list of what you must purchase and what you are fine for renting. If you plan to trek frequently, it's a good idea to invest gradually in your trekking gear.
  • Pack smartly, but do not leave even the smallest essential
  • While purchasing travel insurance, double-check with your agency that it assists in the mountains of Nepal. Many don't. Helicopter evacuation and medical bill coverage are non-negotiable in the travel insurance for the EBC trek.
  • You will need cash on hand during the trek. Nepal is gradually embracing digital payment or card payments, but cash payment is required for small vendors, even in big cities like Kathmandu. In the mountains, cash is the only way to make transactions. Some premium lodges may expect payment via card, but network instability can hinder your transaction. So, carry ample cash during trekking. You can use your international card to withdraw money from an ATM. Make sure to have small notes on you.
  • The network along the Everest Base Camp trail is not great throughout the year. Moreover, the unstable weather and rainfall chances in June make the network worse. Please trek without using the internet.

Some general trekking tips for EBC Trek in June

  • Carry wet tissues to wipe yourself during trekking. Hot showers are not available everywhere and cost additional money.
  • If you take many pictures and videos, pack spare batteries and power banks. A charging facility is available but costs USD 1 to USD 2 per device.
  • Buy two kinds of water bottles: one big bottle for drinking water and one small bottle for keeping soups or teas warm for at least 8 to 12 hours.
  • Buy electrolytes or ORS. Drink them whenever you need an instant boost of energy or feel dehydrated.
  • The package covers significant expenses, but things like charging, showering, WiFi, etc., are not included. Therefore, carry adequate cash.

Be mountain smart

  • You may pass by yaks or mules on the way. Always stand on the cliff side and let them pass first. Do not disturb the cattle or try to pet them.
  • Mountain communities are welcoming and humble. Do not feel shy about interacting with them or asking for help.
  • Do not litter the trail, and carry the waste you see on the trail down with you.

Nepali etiquettes

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples or rural villages.
  • Respect local culture and traditions.
  • Ask for permission before taking pictures inside temples.
  • Always open your shoes before entering temples or someone's house.
  • Do not touch paintings, antiques, or scullions inside the temple.
  • Refrain from disturbing monks who are meditating or chanting while visiting monasteries.
  • Learn a few Nepali phrases like hello, thank you, how are you, etc, to mingle with the locals.
